Obituary for Casey Hartzell Rankin

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Casey Hartzell Rankin, who lived from September 5, 1974, to August 24, 2025, in Casper, Wyoming. Casey touched everyone he met with his kind heart, joyful spirit, and unwavering optimism—even in the face of life’s toughest challenges.

Though technically born in Greeley, Colorado, Casey was a Wyomingite through and through. His family lovingly teased him about being a “Greenie,” but Casper was always his true home. He spent his childhood and adult years there, embracing ranch life and the outdoors he so dearly loved.

A graduate of Kelly Walsh High School in 1993, Casey pursued further studies in Fort Collins with dreams of becoming a veterinarian. His longest-held occupation was as a ranch hand—a role that perfectly reflected his love for the land, animals, and the rugged honesty of ranch work. Casey had a special bond with his dog, Stormy, and a lifelong love of horses. He was also a gifted artist, known for drawing animals, especially horses.

In 1998, Casey was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis, a challenge he met with extraordinary grace. Despite hardships, he remained joyful, gracious, and resilient. He was known for his goofy humor, positive outlook, and his lighthearted “Oh geez” moments—words that became a touchstone of laughter for family and friends. Even in struggle, Casey’s optimism never dimmed, and he continued to brighten every room he entered.

Casey is survived by his brother; Cody Rankin (nieces Emma and Claire); step-siblings Jacque Stoldt (husband Will, nephew Sawyer, niece Ella) and Jason Waldock (wife Ashley, nephew Karch, nieces Shelby, Kimber, and Bentley); extended family (Samantha Rankin and the Mitchell family). He was preceded in death by his mother, Claudia Gurney Waldock; stepfather, Steve Waldock; and father, Thomas Rankin.

The Rankin family wishes to extend their heartfelt gratitude to the staff and facility of NOWCAP Services in Wyoming for their compassionate care and support during Casey’s final years.

May Casey’s memory be honored by carrying forward his joy, resilience, and generous spirit. Friends and family are encouraged to remember him in their own ways—through stories, photos, and moments that celebrate his love of life, animals, and the boundless optimism with which he faced each day.

Casey’s ashes will be interred with his mother Claudia in Torrington, and the Rankin Family will be hosting a celebration of life in the coming weeks, details to follow.

Rest in peace, Casey Hartzell Rankin. Your resilient and positive light will remain with us always.
