Catherine Delores James

Catherine "Delores" James entered the world on August 21, 1932 in Pickens, MS. She was the middle of three children born to Mckinley and Ella Walker James. Catherine was preceded in death by her brother, Spearman James and sister, Imogene James. Her brother, Dennis James, born to Sue Hallie James resides in Goodyear, AZ.

Catherine attended primary and grade school in Holmes County MS (The Little Red School House). She later attended and graduated from Natchez College High School. She also attended the Garfield Business Institute in Beaver Falls, Pennsylvania, where she completed the requirements for speed writing and shorthand in June of 1971.

"Kat", as many of her friends called her, was involved in school activities, especially the choir. In fact, she was one of the lead soloist as she was an extremely gifted singer and pianist. She sang at many important events, as well as on the radio in Natchez, MS with her sister Imogene. They were known as the James Sisters.

At the Second Annual Mississippi Gospel Music Awards held at the Masonic Temple on Sunday, October 1, 1978, Catherine won the "Single Female Vocalist of the Year Award" as well as the award for the "Best Recording by a Single Artist" for her gospel hit, "My God is So Good to Me."

Catherine served as President of the New Mount Zion Choir as well as the Director of Music for many years. She also serve as the Choir President at New Hope Baptist Church, Jackson, MS; Dr. Jerry Young, Pastor.

Catherine work many years at the University Hospital as a secretary in nursing service and as an office secretary.

Catherine was married to Mr. Johnny Hawkins, they were the proud parents of Jocelyn and Johnny Hawkins. She later wedded Mr. George Grant.

Catherine is survived by her son, Johnny Hawkins; three grandchildren: Omari and Hassan Hawkins and Timothy Milton who along with his wife, Tiffany have given her two beautiful great grandchildren: Miya and Mariah Jocelyn Milton; and her brother, Dennis James.
