Catherine “Kitty” McCormack, age 87, died peacefully surrounded by her family on March 4, 2025. She was born to John & Alice D’Arcy of Dranganmore, County Tipperary Ireland on November 8, 1937, the oldest of 15 children. After attending nursing school in England, she moved to the Bronx, NY, where she met her husband Tom McCormack from County Kilkenny. In spite of an intense county rivalry, they married in 1967, and had four sons, Joseph, John, Thomas and Kieran.
She worked at the Hebrew Home for the Aged, and then at Fordham University at the assisted living facility for retired Jesuits. Finally, she moved to Calvary Hospital, where she cared for terminal patients.
Kitty and Tom raised their four boys, bringing them back to Ireland frequently and instilling a strong appreciation for their shared heritage. When not in Ireland, vacations were to Rockaway Beach or East Durham in the Catskills.
Once their boys were grown, Tom and Kitty retired at age 62 and thoroughly enjoyed their retirement traveling around the world. They also became very active in the lives of their grandchildren, attending many sports and arts events. They were always a fixture on the sidelines and even traveled to Ireland to watch their grandkids play Gaelic Football.
Kitty is pre-deceased by her husband Tom, and her oldest son Joseph and seven of her younger siblings. Shortly after the passing of her husband, Kitty ended over 50 years in the Bronx and relocated to Naugatuck, CT, where she became a parishioner of St. Francis of Assisi Church. She loved to go out to eat with family, and was a regular at Burnsies, Coddingtons, and The Playwright.
Kitty is survived by her three sons, John (Alison), Tom (Sarah) and Kieran, as well as eleven grandchildren, Joseph, Aidan (Rachel), Kaitlyn, Annie, Kian, Jack, Fiona, Molly, Rory, Seamus and Grace, and her first great-grandchild, Saoirse Ann.
