Catherine Rose Marshall

Catherine Rose (Pellicotte) Marshall, 84, of Highmore, passed away on Tuesday, October 28, 2025, at Highmore Health in Highmore.

Memorial service will be 10:00 a.m., Monday, November 24, 2025, at the Church of Christ, Highmore, with Rev. Kevin Townsend officiating. A visitation will begin at 9:00 a.m. at the church.

Cathy was born on December 2, 1940, in Brewster, Minnesota, to Nicholas and Rose Pellicotte (Westhauser). She moved to Highmore, South Dakota, in 1946. While in Highmore, she attended school and graduated in 1958 (go Pirates!). One of her proudest accomplishments while in high school involved the many clubs and events she attended while in pursuit of that prestigious "H" pin. After graduating with both her diploma and "H" pin, she moved to Aberdeen, South Dakota, to attend Northern State Teachers' College.

After attending college and getting her teacher's certification, she moved to Huron, South Dakota, where she taught second grade for two years. It was during this time that she met the man who turned out to be the teacher's "apple of her eye", Pierre "Cubby" Marshall. Cathy and Cubby got married in 1963 and moved to Fort Smith, Montana, where she again taught second grade students. Since Cubby worked on dams and was one of the best dam workers around, they then moved to Pomeroy, Washington. After that dam was finished, it was on to Orofino, Idaho, for the next dam, where they lived for five years. It was during this time in Orofino that Cathy and Cubby welcomed their two children into this world, David Marshall and Diane Townsend (Marshall).

Since dam work involves a lot of moving around the country, Cathy and Cubby decided to move to Malone, New York, in 1973, before their children started school. In 1975 after the death of Cathy's father, Nicholas, her mother, Rose, also moved to New York, where Cathy balanced taking care of her mother and raising her children. Cubby and his brother started a construction company in New York, where Cathy transitioned from a teacher to secretary of the company. Although she had to give up teaching in schools at that time, since teaching others, especially children, was such an important part of her life, she continued to look for any opportunity to pursue her passion. This involved teaching Sunday School and VBS at church, helping any kids she came in contact with through her "object lessons", and engaging the kids in the neighborhood who constantly hung out at their house. As her children got older, she had time to substitute teach the special education class at Franklin Academy High School in Malone, New York.

Along with teaching others and helping those in need, she was very crafty. She was a member of the craft club Valley Bees and took pride in being the person responsible for their display at the county fair. Her children also benefited from her craftiness during their science fair project, with the crowning achievement being the paper mâché solar system she assisted her daughter with. Those other students didn't stand a chance with that out of this world display. There wasn't any household item that couldn't be repurposed into some sort of craft idea.

Cathy was ahead of her time when it came to nutrition and meals for her family. Each meal was nutritious, properly balanced for color, and representative of the food groups. She also had the dessert rule of 2 cookies max, a rule her husband and kids still abide by to this day.

When Cubby sold the construction company in 1997, and with both the kids now in Kansas City, Missouri, Cathy was an activities assistant at Highmore Health, where she enjoyed using her creativity with the residents and staff. She was also a regular with Cubby for meals and bingo at the senior citizen center.

One of her favorite things to do was to travel and create memories with her family. This included going on multiple cruises with her kids, along with traveling back to New York and Kansas City to spend time and holidays with family. It also let her collect spoons and playing cards from her vacation destinations.

Survivors include her husband. Cubby Marshall in Highmore; her children: David and Diane in Kansas City, Missouri; four grandchildren: Nichole, Sara, Brittanee, and Ryan; seven great grandchildren: Alison, Kira, Lucas, Harlow, Luna, Nora, and Winnie; one brother, Pete Pellicotte; and one sister, Roseann Rowden (Pellicotte); and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Nicholas and Rose; her brother, Eddie Pellicotte; and numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins.
