CDP Sr. Mercedes Berbach

Sister Mercedes entered her new life on Thursday, March 26, 2026, at the age of 99.

She was the daughter of the late Norman J. and Laura May Berbach, and had two sisters.

Mercedes entered the Sisters of Divine Providence on December 27, 1951 from St. Mary Parish in the McKees Rocks neighborhood and made Final Vows on August 10, 1958. She received her BA from Mt. Mercy College (now Carlow) and her MEd from the University of Pittsburgh. Sister's ministries were varied; she taught in diocesan schools for 34 years, worked in Medical Records at the former Divine Providence Hospital for 12 years, and after completing her training, served as Chaplain at Resurrection Medical Center in Chicago for 10 years.

In retirement, Sister Mercedes continued in volunteer ministries for several years. She was preceded in death by her parents and sister, Geraldine B. Fisher; and is survived by her sister, Mary Ann Crespy.

Viewing will take place at The Commons at Providence Heights on Tuesday, March 31 from 12:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m. with a Prayer Service at 5:30 p.m. On Wednesday, April 1, 2026, a Liturgy of Resurrection will be celebrated at 3:00 p.m., in Visitation Chapel of Kearns Spirituality Center, 9000 Babcock Blvd., Allison Park, PA 15101. Burial will follow in the Providence Heights Sisters' Cemetery.
