Smith Family Funeral Homes - WestbrookWith heartfelt remembrance, we announce the passing of Cecil Wayne Mathis, who departed this life on August 22, 2025, at the age of 74. Born on June 17, 1951, in Holly Grove, Arkansas, Wayne was the beloved son of the late Cecil and Alice (Morris) Mathis.
Wayne’s life was filled with simple joys and meaningful connections. In his younger years, he could often be found at the local bowling alley, effortlessly throwing strikes, or cheering from the sidelines at the ball field for his favorite number 11—his beloved “Punk.” His love for iced tea was legendary, and it was rare to see him without a glass in hand—whether relaxing at home, sitting on the porch, or riding through town.
Though not a cowboy himself, Wayne had a deep appreciation for westerns. He was especially fond of The Rifleman, drawn to its tales of grit, justice, and adventure. These timeless stories offered him comfort and escape.
An avid outdoorsman, Wayne found peace in nature’s quiet rhythms. Whether in a deer stand at sunrise, casting a line into tranquil waters, riding four-wheelers down dusty country roads, watching horses graze in the pasture, or sitting beside a crackling campfire under a canopy of stars, he felt most at home surrounded by the beauty of the outdoors. Even in life’s quieter moments, you could find him in his favorite chair, sipping iced tea and watching the cars pass by—content, reflective, and fully present in the stillness.
Wayne was a devoted father to three children who brought him immeasurable joy and pride. His heart grew even fuller with the arrival of his granddaughter, whose smile lit up his days and whose laughter echoed in his heart.
He is survived by his children: Jennifer Wulf and husband Trey of MI, Jaclyn Mathis and fiancé Cesar Gomez of AR, and Garrett Mathis of AR; his cherished granddaughter, Naomi Gomez; seven siblings: Wilma Stewart, Carroll Mathis, Danny Mathis, Kaye Griffin, Gerald Mathis, Gary Mathis, and Preston Mathis; three aunts: Betty, Christine, and Mary; one uncle, Charles; and many cousins, nieces, nephews, and dear friends who will carry his memory forward with love and gratitude.
He was preceded in passing by his beloved parents, Cecil and Alice Mathis, and his cherished sister, Ann Mathis McFadden.
Though Wayne is no longer with us in body, his spirit lives on—in every strike thrown, every western watched, and every glass of iced tea raised in his honor. He will be deeply missed, but his memory will be lovingly celebrated.
The family extends their deepest gratitude to the caregivers who supported Wayne over the years, especially his brother Gerald. Uncle Gerald, your unwavering compassion and frequent check-ins brought comfort and dignity to his life. We are forever grateful for the love and care you showed our father.
