A friend to many, CEDRIC CORTRELL JENKINS was a smart and caring young man who dedicated his life to family. He loved family get-togethers and filled the room with laughter and spread his contagious sense of humor. He was passionate about photography, basketball, and chess.
Born in Cuthbert, GA, on May 25, 1966, to loving parents, Allie and Sammie Jenkins, Cedric was reared in the spirit of Christ. He was baptized at Sardis Baptist Missionary Church in Dawson, GA, and was educated at Terrell County High School in Dawson, GA, where his basketball skills were honed. He earned both academic and athletic scholarships to the University of Kentucky where he graduated in 1988, in just three years, with dual degrees in marketing and business. He was known as "Swoop" due to his ability to show up for the dunk. He went on to play professional basketball throughout Europe (Belgium, Germany, and Italy) and Asia (Japan). Before retiring from the sport, he played in the Continental Basketball Association (CBA) with the Wichita Falls Texans.
Cedric served God's people as a Deacon for the Main Street Baptist Church in Lexington, KY. He also served as the new members leader for the Consolidated Baptist Church, in Lexington.
A skilled banker and a man of wisdom, Cedric enjoyed financing small businesses. He was an entrepreneur at heart and owned a GNC franchise as well as real estate. Raised in a family of educators, Cedric had a tender heart for young people and spent his time coaching and advising them. He raised two sons teaching them to step through fear and pursue their dreams.
On Sunday, March 19, 2023, Cedric went to rest. He was preceded in death by his father, Allie Jenkins.
Cedric's legacy and precious memories will forever be etched upon the hearts of his wife, Jamie Jenkins; his sons, Alijah and DeShawn Jenkins; his mother, Sammie Armistad Jenkins; his sisters Tammye (Mack) Ware, Linda (Carl) Hollister of Springfield, VA, and Edna (Walter) Davis of Hampton, VA; and a host of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins, in-laws, and friends.
A special thanks to his Kentucky brothers, Leroy Byrd, Irving Thomas, and Paul Andrews who served each other as safety nets in many a storm.

Cedric hired me as a young man to work in his GNC store over 11 years ago and I can honestly say he was one of the most genuine and nicest people I've ever had the pleasure to work with. I had the privilege to meet his beautiful family and I could clearly see he was a very blessed individual to have them in his life. I haven't talked to him in years but he left a great impression on me as a man and my sincere condolences go out to his family. I know Jesus has this man now and he's at peace, we'll miss you down here until we meet again.

I was a Little Sister at Wildcat Lodge when Cedric was at UK. We were friends on Facebook in the later years. He was such a kind person and had a real touch with photography. I am sad at his loss and will remember him for his kindness. My deepest condolences to his family and close friends.

There are no words to express just how genuine and kind Cedric was. Always smiling! He helped me at the GNC store in Hamburg, Lex KY when I was having issues with milk based protein shakes..he figured out I was allergic to milk protein...that changed my life. We always had wonderful chats when he was there. I know his family will greatly miss him....what an AWESOME, Genuine man, father, son, sibling and friend Cedric was.
Will continue to keep the family lifted in prayers.

I met Cedric at the Lexington Chess Club. As he attended regularly and played in local tournaments, he was always upbeat and happy, and became a friend. When he moved out of town I lost contact with him, but when Covid hit, he started playing in Lexington's weekly online tournaments under his moniker, Swoop. It was fun to chat with him online in those isolated days, and to compete with him. He was a very good speed chess player and frequently won the tournaments. My thoughts and prayers go out to his family. A great man.
