Mr. Charles Hansford Ayer, 79, of Ehrhardt, entered his eternal home Sunday morning, November 2, 2025. He passed away peacefully at home with his daughter and his puppy, Lilly, by his side.
Born January 9, 1946, in Bamberg County, he was a son of the late Charles Stancel Ayer and Laurette Meeks Ayer Bassett. He was a graduate of Bells High School, Class of 1964. Charles was a proficient welder, enjoyed cooking, hunting, and spending time outdoors.
Surviving are: his wife of 54 years, Dorothy Varnadoe Ayer; daughters, Charlene Ayer of Ehrhardt, Teresa Smith and her husband Roger of Ehrhardt, and Tammy Ayer of Hampton; son, Michael Ayer and his wife Becky of Hampton; 10 grandchildren; and many great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his infant son, Charles Anthony Ayer; sisters, Jane (Willie) Campbell and Linda Wright; and a special uncle that he loved like a father, Robert Ayer.
The family would like to extend their gratitude to Amedisys Hospice for assisting him in his last days; as well as Mr. Wally Medlin of Bamberg and the late Donnie Morris of Blackville, for being such good friends to Mr. Charles, friendships that he cherished deeply.
Graveside funeral services will be held 3 o’clock, Wednesday afternoon, November 5, 2025, at St. Johns Baptist Church Cemetery, 2468 St. Johns Church Road, Ehrhardt.
