Mr. Charles Joseph (Charlie) Brown, former Jackson Mayor and Voice of the Jackson High School Red Devils, passed away Sunday evening, December 17, 2023, at his residence, surrounded by the family that he loved so much. Charlie was born Wednesday, November 25, 1953, in Griffin, GA to the late Charles Bryon (C.B.) Brown, Jr. and Sadie Deraney Brown. Charlie was the owner/agent for Brown Insurance for 38 years. He served as President of the Agent's Council for Cotton States for 2 years. Charlie was a DJ and voice of the Red Devils Sports for 38 years, having broadcast over 400 Red Devil Football games and over 300 Baseball and Basketball games. Charlie served as the Mayor of Jackson from 1994-2011. He ran unopposed for 5 terms and later resigned due to his advancing Multiple Sclerosis. During his tenure of Mayor, the city constructed the Veterans Memorial Park, renovated downtown Jackson, founded Halloween on Second St., and started the 4th of July fireworks and the Christmas Can-a-thon. Charlie's father, C.B. Brown, Jr. also served as Mayor of Jackson. He was first elected in 1963 and between them, they served as Mayor for 48 combined years.
Charlie was a 1971 honor graduate of Jackson High School. After high school he attended Gordon Military College, where he graduated Summa Cum Laude in 1973 and also was presented the Outstanding Cadet medal for ROTC. Charlie was very community minded. In 1980, he was chosen as the Butts County Jaycees Outstanding Young Man. He was also very involved with the Butts County Recreation Department. He served as a baseball coach for 6 years and a District Director for the Dixie Youth Baseball for 8 years. A field at the Recreation Complex was dedicated in his honor in 1987. Charlie served as a Butts County Commissioner from 1985-1990 and was the Chairman of the Commission in 1989. In 1995, he was selected as the Citizen of the Year by the Chamber of Commerce and in 2011, he was inducted in the Chamber of Commerce Hall of Fame. The following year he was inducted in the Recreation Department Hall of Fame. Charlie was the founder of the Diamond Baseball Association and presented a plaque for 20 years of umpiring and service to the Georgia High School Association. Charlie was selected as the "Favorite Public Official" by a Jackson Progress Argus readers' poll in 2009, and he has been quoted as saying "I have loved every minute of it." He was also a founding member of the original Lyons Club and Past President of the Chamber of Commerce.
Charlie is survived by 2 siblings; his sister, Connie McIntyre and his sister & brother-in-law, Sandra & Alan Ayers, 2 step daughters; Niki Dufrene and Jennifer Stenander and 3 step grandchildren; Allie Knight, Ava Wooden and Fischer Stenander, and his special love Anne Barnes and her children; Melissa and Mark. Along with his parents he is preceded in death by his wife; Wendy Lee Brown who passed away in August of 2003.
Funeral Services for Charles Joseph (Charlie) Brown will be held Friday, December 22, 2023, at 11:00 AM in the Jackson United Methodist Church, Dr. Ed Hoard will officiate. Entombment will follow the Service in the Chapel of Peace Mausoleum located in the Jackson City Cemetery.
