Charles Edwin "Bud" Champ, Sr., age 82 of Purgitsville, WV, passed away peacefully Sunday morning, October 22, 2023, at his residence, surrounded by family, and under the care of Hospice of the Panhandle. Born on April 23, 1941, at home in Medley, WV, he was a son of the late Quinten Arthur Champ and Bessie Florence Layton Champ. A son, Charles E. "Eddie" Champ, Jr and brothers Jimmy Dayton Champ and Gary Dean Champ also preceded him in death.
Charles was a Veteran of the U.S. Army and a member of the "Big Red One" First Infantry Division, stationed out of Fort Riley, Kansas. During his service, he completed a tour in Europe, stationed in Berlin, Germany.
Charles was a lifelong logger and was known for his honesty, generosity and hard work. He was an avid fisherman and spent many days at his favorite fishing spot with his friend Doug George who always took the time to make sure he got to go fishing, even as his health declined. After retiring, he and his wife enjoyed attending auctions and collecting glassware; he and his wife, Dottie were the owners of Dot's What Not Shop in Purgitsville, WV. Charles was quite the storyteller, and his home was always open to anyone who passed by and who more than not, left with an invitation to return soon. His two grandsons were the lights of his life and his pride in them was immeasurable.
Surviving is his loving wife of 58 years, Dottie Sue Berg Champ; a daughter, Debra Ann Champ and two grandsons, Quinten Austin Champ and Ethan Quaid Champ, all of whom resided with him in Purgitsville; a sister, Judy (Roger) Pratt of Moorefield, WV; four brothers, Carl (Nancy) Champ of Purgitsville, WV, Roger (Shelia) Champ of Moorefield, WV; John (Barbara) Champ of Purgitsville, WV & Andrew Champ of Purgitsville, WV; two sister in laws, Cheryl Champ of Purgitsville, WV and Sharon Champ of Purgitsville, WV; a daughter in law, Diane Champ and numerous nieces and nephews.
Funeral Services will be conducted 1:00 PM, Thursday, October 26, 2023, at the Fraley Funeral Home Chapel, 107 Washington Street with Pastor Brad Taylor officiant. Interment will follow at the Lahmansville Cemetery, Lahmansville, WV where Military Graveside Rites will be accorded by the U.S. Army and the Moorefield Veteran’s Honor Guard. The family will receive friends from 5 - 8 PM Wednesday at the funeral home.
