Total strangers, first meeting as bewildered freshmen at Harvard, immediately bonding and becoming roommates for 4 years, the bonds of affection and respect only deepened over the years. College reunions, attrndance at his wedding to Ginny, an arduous canoe trip on the Missouri River in Wyoming to celebrate the 200th Anniversary of the Lewis and Clark Expedition (which greatly appealed to Charles' passionate historical sensibility) and the last few years of constant email contact among what Ginny has called the "old boys" on the vagaries and vicissitudes of life as we entered our 80s all have been a great source of pleasure. His emails were notable for their erudition and wit, particularly on Kansas/Missouri history. One of my fondest memories of Charles was a wrestling match in our dorm to celebrate my finishing my senior thesis in the Spring of 1962. Why we thought it made any sense to celebrate in this fashion as we had never wrestled before has been forgotten by me, but I mention it now as it reminds me of his unique combination of seriousness and fun. Rest in peace, my old friend!

So very sorry Ginny and Gretchen and Amelia. I remember him as such a gracious and interesting person when we met at Wellesley gatherings in the past. Clearly he was a remarkable person who ended with a life well lived.

I knew (know) Charles and Virginia through their outstanding leadership in the performing arts in Kansas City, including the Kansas City Symphony, Lyric Opera of Kansas City, Harriman Jewell Series and other organizations. Both of them were (are) exceptional in their loving support of the performing arts. My wife Pat and I were on several operas tours where Charles and Virginia also were travelers, and we thoroughly enjoyed many good times with them. He was an exemplary citizen of our community and we will miss him greatly.
