Charles Cloyd Obituary

Charles Arnold Cloyd was born January 13th, 1947 in Los Angeles to Rayford and Kathryn Cloyd. Charlie passed away at his home in Tualatin, Oregon on December 6th, 2025 at the age of 78 surrounded by family. His health had been failing for the last several years.

Charlie grew up in LA. He had a cousin, Mike Price, who was like a brother to him. At twelve years old, Charlie professed in the gospel meeting of Harry Meridian and Walter Pollock in Pacoima, California, and was baptized at 18 in Bakersfield, California. A faithful family, The Cloyd home was often visited by friends and workers, among whom were Therald Sylvester and Everett Wilcox.

High school saw Charlie active on the tennis team, where he was quite competitive. Charlie and Mike also liked to work on their cars together at the local body shop. Charlie owned a 1959 Chevy El Camino dark blue with 12 inch slicks. One favorite memory from his youth was visiting Disneyland just after it opened; this became a place he looked forward to visiting throughout his lifetime. Charlie graduated from Benjamin Franklin High School in 1964.

Charlie went to Cal State in L.A. for almost four years for a Zoology degree. Prior to finishing the degree, he enlisted in the Navy as he did not want to be drafted during the Vietnam War. He enlisted as an E3 and served as a medical corpsman. During that time, he was in Vietnam, the Philippines, and Japan. Tom Stelfox and Stewart Roe were two brother workers in Vietnam, who often visited and called on him. Charlie attended a baptism while in Japan. He often spoke fondly of that memory. During his time in the Navy, Charlie enjoyed singing bass in the Blue Jacket Choir and playing the trombone. While in Vietnam, Charlie contracted amebic dysentery and was medi-vacced to a hospital ship.

Once Charlie recovered, he was stationed in Hawaii, where he met Nancy Munn. They married in Salem, Oregon on May 8th 1971. After they were married, they lived on the military base in Hawaii for just over two years. Charlie was discharged from the military on April 17th, 1974 as an E5 Hospital Man 2nd class, serving a total of six years.

After being discharged from the Navy, Charlie and Nancy moved back to Los Angeles so Charlie could pursue a degree in business with an option in accounting at Cal State University. Charlie and Nancy lived in California for five years. During that time they had their daughter, Sherolyn, in December of 1976.

Eleven months later, Charlie and Nancy moved to Lake Grove, Oregon where Charlie took a job with First State Bank. A few months later, they moved to Tualatin, Oregon, and in February 1979 their son Jeff was born.

Charlie continued to work for First State bank during those early years. He then went to work for Kaiser Permanente as an internal auditor and then later an application coordinator. Charlie and Nancy welcomed a second son, Brice, in October of 1985. Charlie continued with Kaiser for 26 years. After retiring from Kaiser, he worked for the State of Oregon as a tax auditor for five years.

Over the years, Charlie and Nancy enjoyed many school activities, community events, fellowship, bike rides, and picnics with their family and friends. Champoeg State Park was one of their favorite places for outdoor activities. One special memory was a two week family camping trip to Mt Rainier. Charlie enjoyed occasional trips to California to reconnect with special friends, workers, family, and of course, Disneyland and Knott's Berry Farm. Seaside, Depot Bay, and Gleneden Beach became frequent destinations on the Oregon Coast.

Charlie and Nancy enjoyed the privilege of having Sunday morning fellowship meetings in their home from January 1998 until Charlie's health failed and he was no longer able. Their faith has always been the center of their family and life together.

Charlie is preceded in death by a baby sister (Kathleen) and his parents (Rayford and Kathryn Cloyd).

Charlie is survived by his wife Nancy and their three children: Sherolyn (Aaron) Berdan, Jeff (Brie) Cloyd, Brice (Danielle) Cloyd, and his grandchildren (Ethan and Kylee Berdan), (McKenzie and Carter Cloyd), and (Noah, Luca, and Ezra Ballenti), extended family, and many special friends
