Medford, Oregon, alongside his brothers William and Michael, and half-siblings SueAnne and Scott. Dan's life would become a remarkable testimony of faith, service, and compassion.
The most impactful decision of Dan's life came at the age of 17 when he committed his life to Christ. That decision shaped every step that followed and became the foundation of a lifetime devoted to serving others.
In 1960, Dan married the love of his life, Judi Nolta. Together they built a strong and faith-filled family, raising five children: Julie, Jeff, Daven, Darci, and Dixie. Later, their family grew again when their daughter Rene came to live with them. Dan's greatest pride was his family, and his steady presence, wisdom, and deep love will continue to guide them for generations.
Dan spent many years serving as a pastor in the Friends (Quaker) Church, faithfully shepherding congregations and walking alongside people in every season of life. Later, he answered a call into full-time police chaplaincy. Dan co-founded the Tacoma-Pierce County Chaplaincy and served as Chaplain for the Pierce County Sheriff's Department for over twenty years before retiring in 2004. His legacy in police chaplaincy spanned 32 years and his leadership, courage, and calm presence brought comfort in the darkest hours to countless first responders and families throughout the community.
In addition, Dan helped found and served as director of the Police and Fire Training Academy, where he helped train hundreds of chaplains from across the Pacific Northwest and around the world. He was also a member of the International Conference of Police Chaplains and was a past president. Through this work, his influence extended far beyond his local community, equipping others around the world to carry forward a ministry of care and compassion.
Dan was a beloved and deeply respected member of the community. Hundreds considered him not only their pastor or chaplain, but their close friend. He often described his work of compassion in times of crisis as a "painful privilege," a calling he carried with humility, strength, and unwavering dedication.
