Deacon Charles Curtis Covington affectionately known as "Po-C", "Po-Man", or "Busy B"- was born on August 19th 1931, in
Rockingham, NC to the late Oscar and Lizzie Robinson- Covington. He was the youngest son of his 11 siblings who have all preceded him in death.
Deacon Covington was a member of Popular Springs A.M.E. Church of
Rockingham, NC. He attended Ashley Chapel School and later became a member of Popular Hill Lodge #331 F.A.M. of
Rockingham, NC.
Since his early age, he was known for being a hard worker. Curtis worked various jobs, but he would ultimately make Truck Driving his career. He worked for Maslin Brothers Trucking Company for 24 years until they closed. The remaining years, he worked for and would retire from ABF Trucking. Curtis spent over 50 years dedicated to his truck driving career. He knew almost every truck company by name and seemed to even know how to navigate the Tri-State area by heart. He was able to drive a 53-footer and park it in place better than any car. In 1947, he relocated from
Rockingham, NC to Baltimore, MD and would later move to
Newark, NJ in 1952, a place where he would call home for the remainder of his life.
In August of 1953, Curtis met Clementine at a beauty shop. Her cousin introduced them while they were there and from that moment on, they fell in love. They would later get married on February 21st, 1954. When asked her favorite thing about Curtis, Clementine said she loved that all she had to do was make the plans and he would be right there; she stated, "he always agreed with me". The thing Clementine will continue to cherish about him most, is his seeing his "handsome smile" every day. Together, they would have four children in their union: Francine (deceased), Karriem, Kenny (deceased), and Julianne.
Under the leadership of the late Reverend L. Phillip and The St. Phillips Baptist Church, Curtis was ordained a Deacon on August 3rd, 1960. Later, he moved his membership to Ebenezer Baptist Church under the leadership of the late Reverend W. Lee. Eventually, Curtis would serve as the chairman of the Deacon Board and singing on the male chorus with his sons. Curtis remained a faithful member of Ebenezer for 45 years. In March of 2011, Curtis and his wife Clementine joined the St. Peters Baptist Church under the leadership of Pastor R. L. Morrast where he would serve as a Deacon and member of the Men's Ministry. He was called the Sr. Statesman.
Curtis has lived a beautiful life. 23 cruises, toured the heart of Europe, went on a Safari Adventure in Africa, and visited many cities across the United States. Together, Clementine and Curtis were trying to use up their children's inheritance as long as his health prevailed.
He's reunited in eternal glory with his daughter Francine, his son Kenny, his two granddaughters Waltina and Nicole. He leaves behind to cherish, his wife Clementine of 69 beautiful years, a son; Karriem and a daughter; Julianne, 9 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren, 3 great-great grandsons, 3 close friends: Teddy Lamd, William Brower, and John McDonald, many nieces, nephews, and friends.
