Charles Cox Obituary
Charles Whitfield Cox Jr., 71, passed away on Wednesday, May 21st surrounded by his family. Born August 30th,1953 in Alamance County, Charles was the son of the late Charles Whitfield Cox Sr. and Thelma Harris Cox. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his brother, Lonnie Reynolds.
Charles is survived by his beloved wife of nearly 50 years, Sheila Kiker Cox, with whom he was looking forward to celebrating their golden anniversary this July. He is also survived by their sons Daniel Cox (Megan), children Hayleigh and Grant, and Matt Cox (Julia), children Jamison and Vivian. All of Union County. He also leaves behind many nieces and nephews whom he adored.
Charles was a man of many talents, interests, and a sharp wit. He was best known by friends and family for his his sense of humor and intellect, having excelled in his career as a pharmaceutical microbiologist where he made life-long friends. From a young age he loved science, particularly pertaining to animals and the ocean, and could often be found combing the beaches of Topsail Island looking for shark's teeth. Many of his happiest memories were made at the Carolina Coast with his family, where he instilled his love of saltwater fishing in both his sons and grandchildren. He also enjoyed cooking, gardening, hunting, and golfing.
Despite his many hobbies and fulfilling career, what Charles cherished most of all was his faith and his family. He loved being a father to Matt and Daniel, and a "Pops" to his four grandchildren, who adored him as much as he did them. When his boys were younger, much of his free time was spent volunteering as a baseball coach at Wesley Chapel Weddington Athletic Association, where he was also a board member for many years.
A devoted servant of Christ, Charles was a faithful member and property deacon at Siler Presbyterian Church. He served his church, family and community with the love and dedication Christ calls us all to have forr one another.
Charles leaves behind a family who will forever carry his memory in their hearts. Though his absence is deeply felt, they take comfort in knowing he has been united with his Savior in Heaven, and look forward to seeing him again one day in glory.
The Family would like to extend their gratitude to Atrium Hospital of Monroe, Atrium Main of Charlotte, and Hospice of Union County for compassionate care.
The celebration of life will be held on Tuesday, May 27th at 2:00 pm at Siler Presbyterian Church in the sanctuary. The visitation will follow the service in the Fellowship Hall. A private burial will be held prior to the service.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Siler Presbyterian Church, WCWAA Baseball, or Hospice of Union County.
