Charles Evans Obituary
Obituary published on Legacy.com by Bacarella Funeral Home, Inc. on Jul. 27, 2024.
Charles Douglas Evans, 81, a lifelong resident of Monroe, passed away peacefully on July 25, 2024, at the Brookdale Assisted Living Center in Monroe after a long illness.
He was born in Middlesboro, KY on May 28, 1943. A 1961 graduate of Monroe High School, Charles entered the US Army in 1962. His duty stations included Kentucky, Georgia, and Orleans, France. After being discharged in 1965, Charles was very proud of his military service and made several veteran group trips to Washington, DC.
On October 3, 1962, he would marry the woman of his dreams, Doris Jean Patterson. They would have two wonderful children, Todd and Tracy.
In a career dedicated to serving the fine citizens of Monroe, Charles worked 29 years at the Monroe Fire Department, where he progressed from fireman to the Fire Inspector. Later, he would spend 14 years as the Monroe Clerk/Treasurer and finally complete his work career with two years as a Monroe City Councilman.
Those who knew Charles, or "Charlie" as his friends called him, understood he had a unique sense of humor. He had endless one-liners and dad jokes, routinely keeping friends and family in stitches.
Above all else, he had a reputation all through his life as being a responsible citizen dedicated to his country and the city of Monroe. He will be remembered by many as a great friend, fun to be with, and an all-around great guy, a wonderful husband and father.
He loved music and could never resist the impulse to sing along when a favorite song played, or to jump in at any Karaoke event.
Coming from a family of eight siblings and with the oldest afflicted with cerebral palsy, his parents often would call upon Charlie to act as a third parent. As the second oldest in a family of nine, he was usually the second father of the household. Charlie took charge of many family events and occasions as his father worked the swing shifts at various local factories. He was the first to have a driver's license, and assumed the responsibility of taking his non-driving mother where she needed to go to keep their busy household running.
He developed a passion for golf. If not playing on golf trips with his brothers or friends, he was watching golf on TV.
Later in life, Charlie loved to spend endless hours at the Monroe Library reading the most notable national newspapers, and at one time, this became a daily ritual. He was pretty proud of his worldly knowledge as he could confidently give an educated opinion on many topics.
To cherish his memory, Charles leaves behind his loving wife, Doris (Patterson); children Tracy Fenelon (Mark) of Tecumseh, and Todd (Eric Cropp) of Bay Village, OH.; grandchildren, Connor and Dylan Gallagher, brothers Gary (Marji McIntyre) of Monroe and Roger (Cindy) of Maricopa, AZ; sisters Mary Fowler of Monroe; Patsy Maigret (Herman) of Ottawa Lake, Judy Haynes (Rick) of Knoxville, TN. and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Richard (Mary "Beulah") Evans, and three brothers, Richard "Dickie", Jr., John, and Steven.
In accordance with his wishes, cremation has taken place. There will be a Celebration of Life in Monroe at Bacarella Funeral Home on Thursday, August 1st, 2024 from 12 noon to 4 p.m. Military honors will be held at 4 p.m. with VFW Post 1138, Monroe.
The family wishes to personally thank Brookdale Assisted Living Center hospice and nursing organizations for their exemplary care, kindness, assistance, and above all, the guidance to his wife, Doris, and son and daughter, Todd Evans and Tracy Fenelon, sisters Mary Fowler, Patsy Maigret, and brother Gary in caring for Charlie these last difficult weeks.
