Charlie Garske, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, uncle and friend, passed away peacefully at the age of 89. Born and raised in Brooklyn, NY, Charlie, as he was known to all, was the son of Charles and Nancy Garske. He graduated from St. John's University before proudly serving his country in the United States Army.
In 1960, Charlie married Barbara Lehmann, and the couple lived in Brooklyn before moving to Pequannock, NJ, where they made their home. Charlie had a long and successful career, first working at Bonomo's Turkish Taffy on Coney Island before joining ITT Corp, where he worked for 35 years and retired as Assistant Treasurer in 1994.
After retiring, Charlie focused much of his energy on his family, particularly his grandchildren. He took great joy in getting them ready for school and attending their events. He often struck up conversations with their teachers, creating lasting connections wherever he went. His genuine warmth, friendly demeanor, and laid-back personality made him a friend to all. He often loved a good cigar, glass of wine and good conversation.
Charlie was also known for his love of cooking, which became a newfound passion after retirement. He eagerly took over the kitchen, investing in new pots and knives, and always enjoyed experimenting with new recipes. His storytelling was legendary, often recounting tales of his life and adventures in ways that captivated those around him.
In addition to his love for family, Charlie had a variety of hobbies, including fishing, boating, target shooting, and creating model planes and boats. He also enjoyed woodworking, crafting beautiful furniture with his own hands. He also took great pleasure in watching his granddogs – Cyan, Bella, Nessy, Alex, Max, Libby, Reggie and Olive – who gave him endless joy and who he gave endless treats.
Charlie is survived by his wife, Barbara; his children, Lisa Lemonie and her husband Michael, Chuck Garske and his wife Anne, and Tom Garske and his wife Mary Mullin; his sisters, Lois Galvin and Maryann Torsiello; and his grandchildren, Nicolette, Michael and his wife Kristy, Charlie III, Sophia, Matthew and Kayla. He was predeceased by his granddaughter, Katie.
Family and friends may visit from 4 to 8 pm on Thursday, February 6 at Scanlan's, Pompton Plains. A funeral Mass will be celebrated 10 am on Friday at St. Mary's RC Church, Pompton Lakes. Burial will follow at Our Lady of the Magnificat RC Cemetery, Kinnelon.
