Charles Gilbert Hooper, 85, passed away Saturday, January 1, 2022, at Mercy Hospice in Johnston, IA. Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, January 8, at the Dallas Center United Methodist Church, where the family will receive friends from 10 - 11 a.m. The service will be livestreamed on the Iles website. Go to IlesCares.com at 1045 a.m. Saturday and scroll to the bottom of Charles' obituary to join in the service. Private inurnment will be held at Brethren Cemetery near Dallas Center at a later date.
Charles was born May 5, 1936, in Des Moines, Iowa, to Charles Henry and Helen (Robinson) Hooper. He served in the Iowa Air National Guard in the 132nd Transportation Division for eight years, where he was on the rifle team and had earned a championship award. On December 23, 1961, he was united in marriage to Janet Richardson from Maxwell, Iowa. They made their home on the Hooper family farm (which later became a Century Farm) where they raised their two daughters. Charles and Jan moved to Waukee in 2015.
Charles was a member of the Dallas Center COOP, Elks Club, DC Coffee Club, and the Dallas Center United Methodist Church. He enjoyed building and flying model airplanes. Charles retired from farming in 1998 and he and Jan spent the next 20 winters in Mesa, Arizona, where they met and made many friends.
Charles is survived by his two daughters, Lori (Dennis) Trammell, Tami (Lyle) Silver; two grandchildren, Chelsea Trammell and Jenna Silver, all of Dallas Center, IA; and his sister, Joyce (Al) Seifert of Adel, IA. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Janet, twin brother, Jerry, and Freddie, his beloved dog.
