Charles "Charlie" Richard Hansen
March 28, 1950 – September 15, 2025
Charles "Charlie" Richard Hansen was born on March 28, 1950, in Smith Center, Kansas, to William and Evelyn Marice (Lamont) Hansen. He was raised in Plainville, where he proudly graduated from Plainville High School with the Class of 1968.
After graduation, Charlie moved to Wichita to attend Wichita Vo-Tech, where he met his future wife, Carol Stuhlsatz. They were married on February 7, 1970, in Garden Plain, Kansas, at St. Anthony Catholic Church. Together, they welcomed three children: Christopher (1973), Chanda (1976), and Cara (1983).
Charlie and Carol began their married life in Stockton, managing a Coast to Coast hardware store. In 1973, Charlie began working in appliance sales at S.A. Long Company. Shortly thereafter, the couple returned to Plainville, where they built a home and life together for more than 50 years.
In 1981, Charlie and Carol became partners with Robert and Erma Carmicheal and later joined by Wes Carmicheal in the Coast to Coast store, now known as Carmicheal True Value. Charlie dedicated more than five decades to the hardware business in Rooks County. Known for his unwavering commitment to customer service, he was the go-to person for solving just about any project challenge. He continued showing up to work every day until the time of his passing.
A pillar of the Plainville community, Charlie embodied the spirit of a servant leader. He helped establish Andreson Park with the Plainville Ambassadors Club, built playground equipment with his son at the City Park and Sacred Heart Grade School, and was a charter member when the Plainville Booster Club reorganized in 1988, serving as President in 1992. One of the most enthusiastic Cardinal fans, Charlie could always be found hooting and hollering from the stands at football, volleyball, basketball, and wrestling events for both his children and grandchildren.
His dedication extended beyond the sidelines. He painted the Cardinal heads on the football field when Chris was in high school, added community pride by painting Cardinals in downtown intersections with Wes; and, for the past decade, helped paint the Cardinal football field before every home game alongside coaches, Chris, and his grandkids.
For more than 40 years, Charlie raised and lowered the American flags that lined downtown Plainville on national holidays - always with help from his children, grandchildren, and friends who bravely stood in the back of his truck as he drove the route at dawn and dusk.
Each morning, Charlie could be found meeting with his coffee crew, discussing the latest news, weather, and - of course - solving the world's problems. His daily rounds included checking in on his children, rental properties, and community projects throughout town.
Charlie had a passion for remodeling homes with his children and improving rental properties across Plainville. He and Carol shared a love for home and yard projects, traveling together, and especially enjoyed ski trips and, later, hiking in Colorado.
Charlie leaves behind his wife of 55 years, Carol; and their three children: Christopher (Kelli) Hansen of Plainville; Chanda (Wade) Palmberg of Shawnee; and Cara (Jake) Hillard of Plainville; eight grandchildren: Noah (Peyton), Benjamin, and Katherine Hansen; Ethan and Abigail Palmberg; and Henry, Jack, and Leo Hillard; and one great-grandson, Brodie Hansen.
He is also survived by his sisters-in-law Edna Hansen of Red Oak, TX and Kathy Stuhlsatz of Green Mountain Falls, CO; brothers-in-law Daryl (Terry) Stuhlsatz of Viola; Dennis (Audine) Stuhlsatz of Wichita; Gene (Becky) Stuhlsatz of Andale; Greg (Kathy) Stuhlsatz of Viola; and Kevin (Jackie) Stuhlsatz of Viola, along with many beloved nieces and nephews.
Charlie was preceded in death by his parents, William and Marice Hansen; his brother, William J. Hansen; and his brother-in-law, Jerry Stuhlsatz.
