A Memorial Service for Charles Richard Hebert is scheduled for 11:00 a.m., November 22, 2025 at Fayette Memorial Funeral Home in La Grange (967 E. Colorado St., La Grange, Texas 78945). The family will receive visitors beginning at 10:00 a.m. prior to the service. Interment will take place at the National Cemetery in Houston.
Charles Hebert, 77 of La Grange, passed away on November 15, 2025 after a long and admirable fight against cancer. He was born on February 13, 1948 in Pawtucket, Rhode Island to Charles L. Hebert and Mary (Richards) Hebert. He grew up and graduated from Pilgrim High School in Warwick, Rhode Island, proudly served in the United States Army for two years prior to attending college and eventually earned a master’s degree from Sul Ross University. During college in Rhode Island, a friend convinced him to transfer to Sul Ross in Alpine, Texas in which Charles fell in love with its culture and his love for Texas history carries through to his books today.
Charles and Sylvia met at Dubois Middle School in Alice, Texas 10 years prior to marriage. As life and time went by, Charles eventually sent a sweet, simple card to Sylvia saying, “You are always in my thoughts”. The two were in communication from then on and they married in Houston in 1991 while he was the Principal of Robert E. Lee High School in Baytown and Sylvia was the Assistant Principal at Pasadena High School.
Throughout Charles career, he was privileged to work in many schools and impact many students. He was employed in Carrizo Springs, Big Wells (Assistant Principal), Duboise Middle School (Principal), Kingsville High School (Principal), Baytown Lee High School (Principal), Willis ISD (Assistant Superintendent), Waco High School, Onalaska High School (Principal), Navasota, Cleveland and he also did statewide work in Texas Education. He referred to his career journey as an “odyssey across Texas”.
Upon retirement, he and Sylvia decided to sell their home, buy a travel trailer and travel the United States – starting with Texas. Cancer put an end to traveling, so they found a happy spot in La Grange along the Colorado River. Unfortunately, they lost their home and belongings to Hurricane Harvey. At that time, their gracious friends, Harold and Linda Streicher offered their home as residence until Charles and Sylvia found a home to call their own. Charles then focused on his passion for Texas Education.
Charles was a wonderful person that was very proud of his and Sylvia’s 5 children, 9 grandsons and 1 granddaughter. He was a well-known educator and author in all of Central Texas. Charles will be dearly missed by his family and friends.
Charles is survived by his wife of 34 years, Sylvia (Morgan) Hebert; children, Charles L. Hebert (Shawna) of Denver, CO, Kelly Davis (Jeff) of Carrizo Springs, TX, Kristin Olsen (Brian) of Stafford, VI; stepchildren, Christian Morgan of Austin, and Amy Buchanan of Diboll, TX; and brother, Michael Hebert.
He is preceded in death by his parents.
The family requests that memorial donations be made to M.D. Anderson Cancer Center or to Michael J. Fox Parkinson’s Foundation.
