Charles “Herb” Matthews, Jr, 82, of Columbia passed away unexpectantly on December 18, 2024.
Celebration of Life Services will be held 2:00 pm on Monday, December 23, 2024, at Temples-Halloran Funeral Home with Reverend Richard Humphries officiating. The family will receive friends from 1:00 pm until 2:00 pm.
The service of committal will be at 2:00 PM Saturday, March 8, 2025 at Friendship United Methodist Church Cemetery, 339 Hwy. 742, Chesterfield, SC directed by Miller-Rivers-Caulder Funeral Home.
Herb was born on December 16, 1942, in Kinston, NC to Charles and Dorothy Kennedy Matthews. He served his country proudly during Vietnam in the United States Army. Herb was a graduate of The University of South Carolina and was a lifelong Gamecocks fan. He was a retired Field Deputy with SC Employment Security Commission and a member of First Baptist Church Columbia. One of his greatest passions in life was owning Z cars and watching TV shows about them. He was a member of The Z Car Club Association (ZCCA) and enjoyed the fellowship with other members, especially during the yearly Migrations meetings. Herb was a lover of music and even was a DJ at Myrtle Beach in his younger days.
In addition to his parents, he is predeceased by his sister, Dorothy Sue and a brother, Gerald. Survivors include his wife of 50 years, Linda S. Matthews and special family members, Kelly and Jerry Kirby and their children, Lily, Emilyn and Kenan.
In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made in Herb’s honor to First Baptist Church Columbia- The Transformers Sunday School Class.
