Charles was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather. He loved having his family around whenever possible and made certain he was available whenever someone had a need. His legacy of the importance of family will continue. Charles was a great storyteller and his stories will live on in his daughters and grandsons.
Charles had a close, personal love relationship with his Lord. He spent time daily in prayer and the reading of the Scripture was of utmost importance to him. He was a member of Gethsemane Baptist Church in Sunny Plain, SC and never missed attending church as long as he was physically able to do so. Charles was actively involved in many ministry positions including deacon and Sunday school teacher at previous churches throughout his life.
In addition to his Lord and his family, Charles was passionate about all things farm related. He and Gene, his brother, were partners in Oak Lane Farm for 35 years where they won awards for their innovative farming techniques. Charles was particularly fond of antique tractors and spent a significant portion of his time in retirement collecting, restoring, and showing them. He was an active member of the Sunny Plain Antique Power Association where he served most recently as president. Throughout his life, Charles participated in many agriculture pursuits. He was the former owner of the Orangeburg Stockyards, a past president of the South Carolina Cattleman's Association, and served on the board of directors for the Calhoun County Farm Bureau.
Charles was born in the Jamison community of Orangeburg, SC, a son of the late Andrew Franklin and Dorothy Mitchum Horger. As a younger man, Charles served as an officer in the S.C. Army National Guard. He was particularly proud of his 30 years of service in the Guard.
In addition to his wife of the home, Charles is survived by his three daughters, Karen H. Sanders (DuPre), Donna H. Watts, and Wendy H. Alsup; six grandsons whom he was proud of, Joey Sanders, Josh Sanders, Jared Watts, Austin Watts, Luke Alsup, and Ethan Alsup; brother, Gene Horger (Mavis); and a number of nieces, nephews, and cousins. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his two sisters, Evelyn Horger Whisenhunt and Mary Horger Hunter.
