Pastor Charles Ray Ison, a stalwart man of faith who enjoyed preaching God's Word, completed his earthly journey on August 19, 2025. Born on January 10, 1949, in Gary, Indiana, Charles grew up to be a man who would touch countless lives with his call to share the Gospel. He passed away peacefully in Rockwall, Texas, leaving behind a legacy of compassion and service.
Charles was the beloved son of the late Evelyn and Bruce Ison. He found his lifelong companion in Sandra, whom he married on July 1, 1967, at New Hope Baptist Church in their hometown of Gary. Together they built a family that included their children Stacie Corbin (Steve), Jesse Ison (Sandy), Shane Ison (Crystal), Charles Ison (Reese), and Marybeth Wilkerson (Brad), along with a beautiful brood of grandchildren and great-grandchildren who will cherish his memory.
His life was marked by a profound dedication to his ministry. Pastor Ison served with honor and humility at Green Acres Baptist Church in Merrillville, IN, Open Door Baptist Church in Country Club Hills, IL, and Central Baptist Church in Bardwell, KY, before ultimately retiring from Central Baptist Church in Fate, TX, in August 2022. In September 2015, he celebrated a remarkable 50 years of preaching, a milestone that speaks volumes of his commitment to his calling.
In addition to his pastoral work, Charles had a diverse career that included positions at Gary Steelworks, The Chattanooga Times, Southern Bell as a lineman, and Citgo Oil Refinery. He also dedicated 22 years as a school bus driver for Rockwall ISD, a role he retired from with fond memories and deep connections to the community he served.
Charles was a man whose interests were as rich and varied as his life's work. He had a passion for telling others about Jesus, and he cherished every moment spent with his grandchildren. An avid collector, Charles took great pleasure in surrounding himself with eagles and Western memorabilia, each piece a story and a memory.
After retiring, he joined Calvary Baptist Church in Royse City, TX, where he continued to share his faith-filled journey with others. His siblings, Sharon Mitchell, Karen Riley, and Daniel Ison, along with his in-laws, William and Darlene Abba, remember Charles as a man who loved his family and his Lord-a man whose faith guided him in every aspect of life.
Pastor Charles Ray Ison's legacy is not only written in the annals of the churches he led but also etched in the hearts of all who had the privilege of knowing him. His life was a testament to the power of faith, the hope of Jesus, and the strength of love. As we bid farewell to this remarkable man, we celebrate the indelible mark he has left on our world.
