Charles Leo Jackson (Pop J), passed away peacefully August 8, 2020 at 97 years of age. He was born June 21, 1923 in Eudora, Arkansas. He was the third child of parents, Al Sanders Jackson and Anna Belle Jackson.

At a young age, Charles traveled to his oldest brother who worked at the railroad round house and acquired employment as well. By the 1940's, at age 19, he traveled to San Francisco where he became an owner of a Speak Easy and this is where his love of jazz began.

In his early 20's, he joined Merchant Marines, sailing over fourteen years around the world. He met his wife Ilda Irene Davis in Seattle and married in 1951. Later he obtained a job working for City of Seattle Sanitation Department, retiring after 27 years. During this time, Charles loved coaching both boys Little League Baseball and Youth League Football in the Rainier Valley. He also became a Professional Baseball Umpire and a highlight was working the Major League Old Timer's Baseball Game in the Kingdome.

In 1958, he became a member of the Musicians' Association of Seattle. His interest in jazz lead and rhythm guitar was displayed in local venues throughout the city. Later he taught guitar for over 50 years. Even at age 95, you would see him at jam sessions every Monday Night in White Center. Charles was a strong and silent man and music was his voice. He was very loyal to his family, principles and to music. He also was an encourager and protector. His other interests included playing pool, cards, telling jokes and spending time with family and friends.

Charles is preceded in death by his wife Ilda Irene Jackson. He is survived by his children: Cynthia Charlene Funk , Cheryl Renee Smith and Charles Leo Jackson II., Grandchildren: Amber Nicole Funk, Fortune Tyler Owens, Elijah Edward Smith, Justin Charles Jackson, Kahlani Cheri Jackson, Dallas Corey Jackson, Sherry Colleen Werth, Gene Harvey Fearn, and Carla Jean Smith. Great Grandchildren: Logan Nicole Jackson, Christopher Thaddeus Werth, James Zacherl Werth, Jacob Daniel Rey Fearn and Michael John Dow.

Charles will be laid to rest at Bonney Watson Washington Memorial in SeaTac, WA. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in his name:
