Obituary published on Legacy.com by John Everett & Sons Funeral Home at Natick Common on Dec. 4, 2025.
Charles Michael "Charlie" Kelly, 91, passed away peacefully on December 1, 2025, in Mahwah, New Jersey.
Born on July 14, 1934, in Newton, Massachusetts, Charlie was raised and educated in the Catholic faith and was a longtime parishioner of St. Linus Church in
Natick, MA. A proud veteran, he served his country in the U.S. Army with the 2d Howitzer Battalion, 172d Field Artillery.
Charlie built a remarkable career at Stowe Woodward, where he began as a lathe and machine operator and rose through the ranks to become Vice President of Engineering. Over nearly four decades, he became a technical expert in all aspects of roll-making for the paper industry. His expertise took him across the globe-Brazil, South Africa, Italy, and throughout Europe and Asia-where he shared his knowledge and helped advance the field. Even after retirement, Charlie continued to contribute as a technical consultant.
Charlie's life was defined not only by professional success but by deep devotion to his family. He was predeceased in 2024 by his beloved wife Joan (MacKinnon) Kelly, with whom he shared a lifetime of love and partnership after meeting on a blind date. He passed away on what would have been their 63rd wedding anniversary. He mourned her deeply and cared for her with unwavering dedication during her battle with dementia and Alzheimer's disease. Their bond remained strong through every chapter of life.
Together, Charlie and Joan raised three children: Jean Testa (Bob), Maureen McGovern (Ken), and Jim Kelly (Bobbi). Charlie took immense pride in their accomplishments and worked tirelessly to ensure they had access to excellent education and opportunities. His joy only grew as he welcomed grandchildren into his life: Jill McGovern (fiancé Mark Desmond), Kayla Duran (Ryan), Julie McGovern, Thomas Testa, Nick Testa (Hanna), Ryan Kelly (fiancée Madeleine Egote), Erin Kelly, and Bryce Kelly. He celebrated their achievements with pride and enthusiasm.
Charlie's home on Sherwood Road in Natick was a hub of laughter and activity-filled with pool games in the basement, half-court basketball matches in the backyard, lively pool parties that brought together friends and neighbors, and Charlie's and Joan's legendary Thanksgiving breakfasts. He had an irrepressible sense of humor-often delivered with a mischievous twinkle-and was known for telling jokes that could make anyone laugh (even if they were occasionally inappropriate). His warmth and charisma made him a friend to many wherever he went.
In retirement, Charlie and Joan embraced travel together, enjoying memorable trips to Hawaii, Italy, and visits to see their children and grandchildren. They were regulars at sporting events-especially their son Jim's football games at Holy Cross-where they earned the title of "tailgate masters." Charlie also enjoyed golfing regularly and cherished his annual trips to Saratoga Race Course in New York.
He was a proud member of the Natick Elks Lodge and remained active in his community for many years before relocating to Mahwah to be closer to family during Joan's final years.
Charlie was predeceased by his parents James J. Kelly and Theresa (Maloney) Kelly; his brother James Kelly; and his sister Marion Graham.
Those who knew Charlie will remember his booming personality, generous heart, sharp wit, and unwavering love for his family. His legacy lives on through the many lives he touched-with laughter, wisdom, support, and love.
Services will be private and held at Everett Funeral Home in
Natick, MA. May his memory bring comfort to all who knew him. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Natick Elks Lodge #1475, P. O. Box 381,

The family would like to extend its heartfelt gratitude to Charlie's loving caregivers at Brandywine, whose dedication, compassion, and kindness brought comfort and dignity to him each day. Their unwavering support will always be remembered with deep appreciation. We also wish to thank the Valley Hospice team-especially Klaudia and Darren-as well as his companions Sophia, Beverly, Robert, and Dianna, for the compassionate and kind care they provided to Charlie during his final days.
