East Providence – Charles D. "Charlie" Lema, 83, passed away peacefully on Monday, January 5, 2026, at Lake Forest Health Center in Smithfield. Born on October 8, 1942, in
Providence, Rhode Island, he was the beloved son of the late Charles and Hilda (Medeiros) Lema.
Charlie spent his formative years in the close-knit community of Fox Point, where he formed lifelong friendships and earned a reputation for his warm, amiable nature. He was a devoted parishioner of Our Lady of the Rosary Church, where he found strength in his faith and fellowship within the community.
Prior to his retirement, Charlie was a proud member of Teamsters Local 251 and a dedicated employee of the Manchester and Hudson Company. He was widely admired for his strong work ethic and the genuine camaraderie he shared with his fellow Teamsters-qualities that truly defined his character.
A lifelong resident of East Providence, Charlie was a familiar and steady presence in the community he proudly called home. He is survived by his three sons, Charlie Lema, Paul Lema, and Jimmy Lema, all of Florida. He is also survived by his brother, David Lema of Fox Point, as well as many nieces, great-nieces, nephews, and great-nephews who loved him dearly. Charlie was predeceased by his siblings, Richard Medeiros, Robert "Bobby" Lema, Yvonne McGurn, and Virginia Curvelo. Though they have passed, his family's legacy lives on through the many lives he touched.
A man who found joy in life's simple pleasures, Charlie had a deep love for birds and could often be found feeding them or, in earlier years, tending to his racing pigeons. He was a proud member of the Rhode Island Racing Pigeons Club, where he shared his passion with fellow enthusiasts. His laughter was infectious, and his playful sense of humor brought happiness to all who had the pleasure of his company.
Those who knew Charlie will remember him as the epitome of kindness and generosity, always ready with a friendly smile or a well-timed joke. His warm spirit and open heart made him a beloved presence in his community.
In his final years, Charlie lived with dementia, a journey that tested both him and those who loved him. Through it all, his gentle nature, warmth, and the memories he created continued to shine brightly in the hearts of his family and friends. He will always be remembered for the person he was throughout his life.
As we bid farewell to Charles D. "Charlie" Lema, we celebrate a life well lived-one filled with love, laughter, faith, and friendship. His memory will forever remain in our hearts, a reminder of the goodness and light one person can bring into the lives of many. Though his passing leaves a void that cannot be filled, his spirit will continue to inspire and guide us. Rest in peace, dear Charlie, until we meet again.
