Charles Matson Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by H.D Oliver Funeral Apartments, Inc. - Laskin Road Chapel on Dec. 26, 2025.
Charles Dean Matson passed away peacefully at home on December 19, 2025 from complications of a rare neurological disorder in family of atypical Parkinsonism called Supranuclear Palsy (PSP). Charlie was born August 30, 1936 to Wallace and Grace Matson in Los Angeles, CA.
He served honorably four years in the United States Navy. Whenever he heard "Anchors Aweigh" he would get choked up with emotion.
True to being a California boy he loved the beach, fishing on a pier and surfcasting. He enjoyed many happy years playing golf with his Thursday golf buddies. Charlie was a fan of Westerns, Big Band music and was a dedicated Commanders fan, ringing his bell after every touchdown. Charlie was proudly certified an Eagle Scout in 1952.
Being adventurous, he mapped many road trips for him and Laurie to travel to our nation's beautiful national parks, which gave many happy memories.
Charlie is survived by his loving wife, Margaret "Laurie" Matson of 33 years. His brother, Richard (Carol) of Kelseyville, CA. Survived by 4 daughters, Norma Skinner (Paul), Sherrie Matson, Michelle Cabral, and Nicole Reid (Shannon), as well as five grandchildren, Clayton, Jeff, Tommy, Kallie, and Chloe. He is survived by brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Barry and Linda Clark, sister-in-law Patricia Claypool, and brother-in-law, Joe Zoby, as well as many cherished nieces and nephews, grand nieces and grand nephews who gave him much joy.
A funeral mass will be held January 9, 2025 at 11:00am at St. John the Apostle Catholic Church. Inurnment to be private at a later date at St. Mary's Cemetery.
Please honor Charlie by doing an act of kindness. Donations may be made to the Virginia Beach Rescue Squad.
