Charles "Charlie" James Mayhue, passed away peacefully at home on February 7, 2026, at the age of 89. He was born on March 7, 1936,in
Madison, Florida to the late Howard and Ella Mayhue. He attended Madison County Public Schools. Charlie moved from
Madison, Florida to
Neptune, NJ where he made his home.
As a longtime Monmouth County fixture for over 50 years. Charlie served the Monmouth County community as a dedicated cab driver, while working with Vets Taxi and Citi Cab Company. More than just a driver, he became a trusted presence in countless lives. To many people, he was not simply a cab driver, but their personal driver. He was dependable and always ready with conversation or quiet understanding, including a listening ear when it was needed the most.
Charlie had a lifelong love for motorcycles and proudly rode with the Free Wheelers Motorcycle Club. The open road suited him. It reflected his independent spirit and love for connection and community.
In his younger years during the 1950s and 1960s, Charlie was a musician and part of a singing group, sharing his voice with the love of music long before playlists and streaming services existed. Music stayed with him throughout his life especially the gospel singer Lee Williams. He loved and always appreciated the soulful sounds of Johnnie Taylor along with Sam Cooke and The Soul Stirrers. Charlie knew every word and wasn't shy about singing along. He also enjoyed playing his guitar, filling the room with melodies that felt like home with his siblings and formative years back in Florida.
Charlie loved fishing, playing the lottery, eating tasty food, music, and enjoying his favorite beverages, along with the company of family and friends. He had a charm that was unmistakable and a very sharp tongue that kept everyone on their toes. He would tell you exactly what he thought, often with humor and confidence. But more than anything, he loved people. He had a way of making others feel seen and safe. He was a friend, father, and grandpa to anyone who needed one, whether by blood or by heart.
He was predeceased by his parents, seven sisters and two brothers.

Matawan, NJ, Jeffery of

Charlie worked nearly until the end of his life. His strength, work ethic, and devotion to family defined him. He leaves behind stories, music, and memories that will live on every road traveled and every song played a little too loud.
Charlie knew and loved the Lord and is resting peacefully in his arms. He will be sorely missed, forever loved, and never forgotten.
