Family and friends celebrate the life and mourn the sudden passing of Phillip Meeler, a baseball lover who made the Show and a romantic who could never hide the joy he felt being with loved ones, no matter how hard he tried. The eldest son of Charles and Edith Meeler, Phillip was born on July 3, 1948, in South Boston, Virgina. His love of rock-throwing and troublemaking, coupled with an overdose of charm (and some good looks), led him to professional baseball in the 1960s and 70s. His ten years pitching with the Detroit Tigers organization saw him journey through the minor leagues, win a Southern League pennant, and throw fastballs in Tiger Stadium as part of Detroit's major league roster in 1972. A young man chasing dreams became a mature one who treasured the lifelong friendships and camaraderie he built with his teammates during those ten years. Phillip succeeded in keeping those relationships alive, evidenced by the outpouring of support and condolences from his friends who still remember the feel of a glove.
After baseball, Phillip lived and loved, often with a toothpick behind his ear. And while he was a man who could say more with an eyeroll than most would dare to try, he met his match when he found his true love. Cathy came into his life as her own woman, full of experience, energy, and expectations. When they met, two individuals who could take care of themselves became fully committed to taking care of each other.
Cathy and Phillip created a true partnership, setting the finest example of devotion, loyalty, and good humor one could ask for. From country drives to mountain excursions, and always with a John Wayne western in arm's reach, Cathy and Phillip understood the importance of just being together. They shared stories, shared friends, shared family, and shared a life.
In later years, Phillip became a community staple, cruising neighborhood streets in a power chair that appeared to be pulled by a much-too-tiny dog. Phillip would chat, he would joke, he would tease, and, most importantly, he would remind the community that if anyone were ever in need, he was ready to help and do for others. His family appreciates how that same community stood by ready to help him.
Phillip remains loved and celebrated by his immediate family, Cathy Meeler, Seth Turner, and Theresa Parlato, and countless family and friends. The family home will be open for visitation on Friday, August 22, 2025, from 2:00 pm to 6:00 pm. A private memorial service for the family will be held in the coming days.
