Family and friends celebrate the life and mourn the sudden passing of Phillip Meeler, a baseball lover who made the Show and a romantic who could never hide the joy he felt being with loved ones, no matter how hard he tried. The eldest son of Charles and Edith Meeler, Phillip was born on July 3, 1948, in South Boston, Virgina. His love of rock-throwing and troublemaking, coupled with an overdose of charm (and some good looks), led him to professional baseball in the 1960s and 70s. His ten years pitching with the Detroit Tigers organization saw him journey through the minor leagues, win a Southern League pennant, and throw fastballs in Tiger Stadium as part of Detroit's major league roster in 1972. A young man chasing dreams became a mature one who treasured the lifelong friendships and camaraderie he built with his teammates during those ten years. Phillip succeeded in keeping those relationships alive, evidenced by the outpouring of support and condolences from his friends who still remember the feel of a glove.

After baseball, Phillip lived and loved, often with a toothpick behind his ear. And while he was a man who could say more with an eyeroll than most would dare to try, he met his match when he found his true love. Cathy came into his life as her own woman, full of experience, energy, and expectations. When they met, two individuals who could take care of themselves became fully committed to taking care of each other.

Cathy and Phillip created a true partnership, setting the finest example of devotion, loyalty, and good humor one could ask for. From country drives to mountain excursions, and always with a John Wayne western in arm's reach, Cathy and Phillip understood the importance of just being together. They shared stories, shared friends, shared family, and shared a life.

In later years, Phillip became a community staple, cruising neighborhood streets in a power chair that appeared to be pulled by a much-too-tiny dog. Phillip would chat, he would joke, he would tease, and, most importantly, he would remind the community that if anyone were ever in need, he was ready to help and do for others. His family appreciates how that same community stood by ready to help him.

Phillip remains loved and celebrated by his immediate family, Cathy Meeler, Seth Turner, and Theresa Parlato, and countless family and friends. The family home will be open for visitation on Friday, August 22, 2025, from 2:00 pm to 6:00 pm. A private memorial service for the family will be held in the coming days.

I've only known Phillip and Cathy a few years. When they told me they were moving in behind me I considered myself lucky enough to get to be their neighbor. Phillip was special, he's one of a kind, always ready for a conversation and very generous. He loved my pups, and they loved him. I sure will miss our conversations and seeing him riding by on a beautiful spring day being led by his much-too-tiny Lizzy. She sure loved him too. Rest in Peace Phillip. You will be greatly missed. Love Lisa Easterly

I can´t remember when I didn´t know Phil. Like so many others, we played a lot of baseball and basketball together. I remember the night he called me at 2 am to tell me he had made it to the big show. I was always welcome at his house and he mine, when he lived out of town he always stopped by to see us when he came to town. When he moved back, we worked and played a lot together. Sue and I named our oldest son after Phil, maybe they will run into each other. Thanks for the memories brother, save me a place at the table,

It was great growing up with Phillip and playing baseball with him in high school and legion ball. I enjoyed being his catcher all those years we just clicked on every pitch. You would always wanted to be on his team and not have to bat against him.I will miss all the talks we have had over the years.

I played little league baseball with Phil in the late 50´s early 60´s. We took turns pitching and I was glad he was on my team so I didn´t have to bat against him. He seemed to be six feet tall and had a fastball nobody could hit. Never forget those days or Phil, good times.

Phillip, we shared the baseball game together as 11 year old(me) and 12 year old(you). Will always remember your curve ball from short stop to 1st base and the havoc it caused. Rest in peace. Ernie McKenney
