Charles Leroy Mock, 92, of Anderson, passed away on March 26, 2026, at Ascension St. Vincent Anderson. He was born in
Eaton, Indiana, to his parents, Doris Marie (Starbuck) Mock and Earl Mock.
He attended Eaton, Royerton and Muncie Elementary Schools. He graduated from Muncie Central High School in 1951, where he played tennis and basketball for the Bearcats. He went undefeated in tennis during his senior year and played on the 1951 Indiana Basketball State Championship Team. He scored 23 points and made the game winning basket with four seconds to go in the final game, defeating Evansville Reitz, 60 - 58. He was a member of the 1951 Indiana All Star Basketball Team. Charley was awarded a four-year basketball scholarship to the University of Colorado after his senior year at Muncie Central.
He married the love of his life, Goldie Walters on August 31, 1952. They were married for 73 years.
Charles played three years of varsity basketball at Colorado. He was a point guard and helped the Buffaloes win two Big-Seven Championships in 1954 and 1955. The Conference Championships earned the Buffs a place in the NCAA Basketball Tournament in both 1954 and 1955. In 1955, he played in the Final Four NCAA Tournament in Kansas City. The Buffs earned third place by defeating Iowa University in the consolation game. Charley graduated from Colorado University in 1955.
In 1956 and 1957, he taught and coached at Lewisville School in Henry County. He taught and coached at Markleville from 1958 through 1962. He was the principal of Markleville School from 1962 to 1969. In 1969, South Madison Schools were consolidated and he was appointed Assistant Principal of Pendleton Heights High School. In 1974, Charley was appointed Assistant Superintendent and in 1980, he was promoted to Superintendent of the South Madison Community School Corporation and served in this capacity until he retired in 1990. In 1990, he was named a recipient of the Sagamore of the Wabash Award by Gov. Evan Bayh. In 1996, Charley was inducted into the Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame in New Castle, Indiana.
During his retirement, Charley spent his free time fishing at Lake Chapman in Warsaw, Indiana, he was also an avid golfer, but his true pride and joy was spending time with his family.
Charles is survived by his loving wife, Goldie (Walters) Mock, two of his children, Jeffrey Duane (Pam) Mock and Jan Elaine Mock (family friend, Gabriele Rohde); son-in-law, Sid (Jan) Rogers; sister-in-law, Wanda Walters Cook; his grandchildren, Craig (Tiffany Spitz) Rogers, Heidi Rogers (Jaime) Greer, Amber Mock (Jeremiah) Crouse, Amy Mock, Kelly (Marshal) Stephens and Kasey Mock Cooksey and great-grandchildren, Braxton Charles, Jase and Tyler Greer, Lana and Lauren Janeanne Rogers, Caleb, Alex and Brendon Coryell, Janssen Kinder, Rylan, Amiah and Quentin Charles Crouse and Jordyn and Anthony Taliaferro.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his daughter, Jill Janeanne Mock Rogers and his brother, Marvin Mock.
Visitation will be held Tuesday, March 31, 2026, from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm at Loose Funeral Homes & Crematory, 200 West 53rd Street
Anderson, Indiana, 46013.
A graveside service and burial will immediately follow visitation on Tuesday at the Friends Cemetery, Pendleton, Indiana, with Pastor Chris Bell officiating.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Muncie Central Athletic Department and/or the Pendleton Heights High School Athletic Department.
