Obituary published on Legacy.com by Keefe Funeral Home - Arlington on Oct. 12, 2023.
Charles Patrick Monaghan was born on October 23, 1948, the son of Sylvia (Krick) Monaghan and Thomas Monaghan in
Lancaster, Pennsylvania. He was married to his high school love, Diane (Schuelkens) Monaghan for 52 wonderful years. They had two children, Paul P. Monaghan and Beth E. Rapoza.
Charley was an inquisitive soul with a passion for writing, finance, and the teachings of St. Francis and the Catholic Church. Charley earned a B.A. from LaSalle University, Philadelphia, PA and an MBA from Southern New Hampshire University,
Hooksett, NH. His devotion to the Catholic faith led him to attain a Catholicism Certificate and complete graduate studies in The Ministry of Consolation at The Theological Institute of St. John's Seminary in Boston, MA. He was a daily communicant at St. Mary's Parish in Waltham.
Charley had a distinguished professional background in commercial banking, having served in leadership capacities at various financial institutions in Pennsylvania, Colorado, New Hampshire, and Massachusetts. He retired from banking in 2013 as President of Mercantile Bank in Boston, MA. Together with his wife and the Franciscans of St. Anthony Shrine in Boston, he co-founded The Pieta Ministry and The Emmaus Ministry for Grieving Parents in 2009 to honor his son, Paul, who died in 2002. Currently, The Emmaus Ministry has partnered with more than 15 Catholic dioceses throughout the United States. Through spiritual retreats, it brings peace, comfort, and hope based on the rich teachings of the Catholic Church. Charley was a beloved Parent Leader of many of these retreats, remembered for his kindness, introspection, and deep sense of faith that he willingly shared with those who were most in need of comfort.
Charley was a loving father to Beth Rapoza (Daniel) of
Arlington, MA. He was a mentor, friend, confidante, and source of strength to all those he encountered. He was a quiet, gentle soul who loved his friends and family deeply. Charley was a loving grandfather to Luke Rapoza (age 13), Kelly Rapoza (age 12), Nicholas Rapoza (age 9), and Mark Rapoza (age 7). He was a superstitious and loyal Boston sports fan who took great joy in watching sporting events only after his team had won. He took great joy in the lives of those he loved, always willing to give what was needed. A loving grandfather, he was ever the willing participant to listen to jokes, taste-test baking concoctions, hear about Cub Scout activities, and go to sporting events with his grandkids. He was a wonderful caretaker of all his family, especially his mother-in-law, Margaret Schuelkens.
Charley departed this life on Monday, October 9, 2023, due to respiratory failure. He is predeceased by his parents Thomas and Sylvia Monaghan; sister Mary Monaghan; son Paul P. Monaghan; and niece Ceara Monaghan.
He leaves to cherish his memory: his loving wife, Diane of Waltham, MA; his daughter, Beth (Daniel) of Arlington; 4 grandchildren (Luke, Kelly, Nicholas, and Mark) of
Arlington, MA; his brother Tom (Carol) of East Macungie, PA; nieces Cindy DeMarco, Beth Busam, Laura Schuelkens, Colleen Gillespie, and Bevin Beckage; and nephew Fr. Dennis Schuelkens.
