Joseph Monaghan Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by McCausland Garrity Marchesani Funeral Home & Crematory on Jan. 17, 2026.
Joseph Monaghan Sr., 75, of South Philadelphia passed away on January 14, 2026 after a long battle with cancer. Born on July 3, 1950 to the late William and Mary Monaghan, Joe was highly educated and experienced in many trades with such proficiency that his "nan" nicknamed him "Golden Hands". Later, he found great satisfaction working as a supervisor for campus police at the University of the Arts for many years until his retirement in 2012. Joe was a loveable, strong and very funny man who, above all, enjoyed spending time with his family and will be missed dearly.

Joe is survived by his devoted children Joseph Jr. (Patricia), Diane (Louis) Dalessio, Lorraine (Joseph) Marchesani and William Monaghan; grandchildren Joseph III, Sean, Victoria, Gabriel, Ava and Valentina; sisters Patricia (Birdie) Sadgwar and Marianne (Eddie) Virgilio along with cousins and many nephews and nieces. He is preceded in death by his loving wife Olga (nee Nicolai); brothers William, James, Thomas and John; and his parents William and Mary (nee Kelly).

The Monaghan family would like to extend their deepest appreciation and gratitude to Dr. Michael J. Ramirez MD, Dr. Mark Testa, the PCU unit at Methodist-Jefferson Hospital (especially Kristy Muller, RN) and the staff of Vitas Hospice for the excellent and professional care that was shown to their father.

Viewing; Relatives and friends are invited to his viewing on Saturday, January 24, 2026 at 10:00 AM followed by Mass at 11:00AM at St. Monica Roman Catholic Church (2422 So. 17th Street, Philadelphia, PA 19145).

Burial; Internment will be at SS Peter and Paul Cemetery (1600 Sproul Rd, Springfield, PA 19064).
