It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Charles Dexter Rigby Downs, a beloved husband, father, brother, uncle, and friend. Charles passed away on Sunday, April 13, 2025, at the age of 68, leaving behind a legacy of love, dedication, and remarkable achievements.
Charles was born on June 7, 1956, to John Charles Rigby and Gladys Downs Rigby. He was the fifth of twelve children and grew up on Corn Island, where he completed his primary studies at Rigoberto Cabeza School. He went on to study at INAHD for the first three years of high school before completing his secondary education at the Adventist College in Puerto Cabezas.
From an early age, Charles found his passion for baseball. His journey as an athlete began with Jose Chow's team, and he quickly made a name for himself, representing Puerto Cabezas in Bluefields. Charles' proudest moment came in 1979, when he represented Corn Island in a baseball series against Puerto Cabezas, where he led his team to a historic victory over Bluefields with a "no-hit, no-run" game.
Later that year, Charles moved to San Andres, Colombia, where he played for the local team in Cartagena. There, he pitched an unforgettable game against Antioquia, achieving another "no-hit, no-run" performance and helping San Andres become the sub-champions of the series. His exceptional talent earned him the title of Most Valuable Player and Best Pitcher of the Series.
In 1980, Charles was drafted by the Pittsburgh Pirates to play professional baseball, and he continued his career in Jacksonville, Florida, marking the beginning of his career in the world of professional sports.
Charles is survived by his beloved wife, Elizabeth Bolaños Rigby, and his children, Charles Dexter Rigby, Alan Rigby, Cynthia Rigby, and Jaisell Rigby. He is also mourned by his five sisters, Yvonne Marie, Carla Alerta, Lucy Ann, Cynthia Isadora, and Gladys Salome; his four brothers, Costeen Harrel, Lowell Alvin, John Greherd, and Floyd Wyman; two aunts, Berdith Downs and Maudlin Knox; and a host of nieces, nephews, and many other relatives and friends who loved him dearly.
Charles found comfort in his faith, and one of his favorite passages was Psalm 23, which he held close to his heart throughout his life.
Charles will be remembered for his love of baseball and Fishing, his devotion to his family, and his unwavering spirit. He was a true pioneer who always strived to achieve excellence in everything he did, and his memory will live on in the hearts of all who knew him.
