Our loving husband, father and grandfather went home to be with the Lord on Wednesday, May 24, 2023. Age 77 years.
Rusty was born on September 21, 1945, son of the late Robert and Euella “Jean” (Gibbs) Van Marter, in San Diego, California. Having served 25 years in the United States Navy during the Vietnam War, Rusty was a proud Veteran. He was a member of the V.F.W. Post #7302, the American Legion Post #22 and many other patriotic organizations. He married Barbara Schomaker on February 15, 1969. She survives him. He retired as a Skilled Trades Leader from Saginaw Steering Gear/Delphi in 2001, after many years of dedicated service and was a member of U.A.W. Local #699. Rusty loved the Lord and had a strong Christian faith. He was a member of Ascension Lutheran Church and was very active in its ministries. He enjoyed woodworking, raising pheasants, watercolor painting, playing cards and baking. Rusty will be remembered for being loving and supportive to his family; his big heart, he would help anyone in their time of need; his great sense of humor, that would be sure to give you a big laugh; and a perfectionist, which he displayed in all aspects of his life.
Rusty is survived by his loving wife, Barbara Van Marter; his daughters, Tracy (Robert) Aldrich and Dana McClure; grandchildren, Brittany Aldrich (Joseph Smith), Nathan McClure and Seaman Alexander McClure; brother, Kim (Teresa) Van Marter; sister, Lynda (Dennis) Thorpe; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Richard and Ruth Schomaker; nieces, Lynn Schomaker and Amy (Ken) Elwert; special cousins, Jo Ordway and Carl Youmans. He was predeceased by his step-father, Joseph Myers.
Funeral Service will take place at 11:00 a.m., Thursday, June 1, 2023, at Ascension Lutheran Church, 8695 Gratiot Road. Rev. Julie Bailey will officiate. Friends may visit with the family from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. and 6:00 to 8:00 p.m., Wednesday, May 31, 2023, at W. L. Case and Company, 201 N. Miller Road and on Thursday at the church from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service. Those planning an expression of sympathy may wish to consider Ascension Lutheran Church. Interment will be scheduled for a later date in Great Lakes National Cemetery in Holly, MI.
