Charles Ryan Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Kerr Brothers Funeral Home - Harrodsburg Road on Dec. 23, 2025.
Charles David "Charlie" Ryan, 91, of Versailles, husband of Rita Mattingly Ryan, passed away peacefully on Monday, December 22, 2025 at Baptist Health Lexington. Born on January 31, 1934, in Lebanon, Kentucky, the first of eight children to the late Charles Bernard and Susan Abell Ryan.
Charlie proudly served his country in the United States Air Force. His sense of duty and commitment extended beyond his military service into every aspect of his life. Charlie spent over 30 years working as a cost accountant for I.B.M., beginning in 1961. A devout Roman Catholic, he participated in Perpetual Adoration for many years, finding strength and solace in his faith.
He was known for his warm personality and gift for storytelling. Charlie had a natural ability to connect with others-his friendly nature and talkative spirit made him a beloved presence among those who knew him. Whether sharing tales from the past or engaging in lively conversation, he brought joy and laughter to many.
Charlie had a deep passion for beekeeping and genealogy. He found great satisfaction tending to his bees and exploring the roots of his family history. These hobbies reflected his appreciation for nature and heritage-values he cherished throughout his life.
Charlie is survived by his loving wife, Rita; daughters Mary Jane (Marshall) Hill, Liz (Mike) Stefanski, and Susan (Mike) Enerlich; son David (Carmen) Ryan; grandchildren Ryan Stefanski, Kevin Stefanski, Mary Grace Hill, Evan Enerlich, Thomas Hill, Sarah Stefanski, Eric Enerlich, Jonathan Ryan, and Amanda Ryan; and great-granddaughter Kaiya Daniel.
He is also survived by siblings Fred (Freda) Ryan, Mary Helen (Clem) Iven, Mike (Marcia) Ryan, Sue Ann (Dave) Warms, and Martha Harrington; brothers-in-law Dan (Janice) Mattingly, Mike (Jean) Mattingly, Fred (Patricia) Mattingly, Tommy Lee (Jennifer) Mattingly; sisters-in-law Mary Hamilton, Mabel (Jeff) Stilger, Ellen (Jim) Currey, Jane Mattingly, Wanda Mattingly; as well as many nieces and nephews who held him dear.
Charlie was preceded in death by his parents Bernard and Susan Ryan; siblings Jim Ryan and Betty Shinn; brothers-in-law Hugh Mattingly and Jerry Mattingly; and his sister-in-law Betty Mattingly.
Charlie's legacy lives on through the stories he told so well and the lives he touched with kindness. May his memory bring comfort to all who knew him.
A Visitation will be held on January 3, 2026, from 09:00 AM to 10:30 AM at Pax Christi Catholic Church 4001 Victoria Way.
A Funeral Mass will be immediately after the visitation from 10:30 AM to 11:30 PM at Pax Christi Catholic Church 4001 Victoria Way. Burial will follow at Calvary Cemetery.
Kerr Brothers-Harrodsburg Road is in charge of the arrangements.

Rita, I´m so sorry to hear about Charlie. I hired in the same year he did at IBM. I remember when I worked with him on different occasions over the years, he always had a big smile, (and usually a story!) He was one of the good guys.
We will all miss him, but I know you will miss him most. Prayers for you and the family, John and Patti Broyles.
