Charles Sands Obituary

Charles David Sands, Jr.

Charles David "Dave" Sands, Jr., of Richmond, VA, passed away on Sunday, March 30, 2025. Dave was born in Richmond, VA, on October 23, 1945, the son of Charles David Sands, Sr. and Frances Dimmick Sands. He was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Ellen Schneider Sands; sons, Charles David Sands, III (Nicole Deitz Sands) and Matthew Austin Clark Sands; and his grandsons, Charles David Sands, IV and Thomas Arthur Sands. He is also survived by his sister, Kathryn Margaret Sands; his sister-in-law, Lynn Schneider Wells (William E. Wells); and three nieces and their children.

Dave grew up in Richmond, VA. He graduated from Thomas Jefferson High School in 1963 and Virginia Polytechnic Institute School of Architecture in 1969. In 1969, Dave returned to Richmond and joined the firm of Baskervill and Son as an Architect, where he remained until retiring in 2016. Dave took great pride in his architectural work for the VCU Health System, Federal Reserve Bank of Richmond, and McGuire VA Hospital. But, as an avid sports fan, the project that thrilled him most was his work with the design of The Diamond Baseball Park. Dave was a proud Hokie and loved attending football games in Blacksburg.

Family and friends will be received 1 to 3 p.m., on Wednesday, April 9, 2025, at Bliley's Central Chapel. A memorial service will follow at 3 p.m. Interment will take place at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to St. Christopher's School, 711 St. Christopher's Rd., Richmond, VA 23226 or to Doctors Without Borders USA, P.O. Box 5030, Hagerstown, MD 21741-5030.
