Charles Pat Schmitt was born on March 17, 1937, in Brooklyn, New York in Bethany Deaconess Hospital to Charles and Irma (Hausman) Schmitt. He is survived by one younger brother, Warren (Joanne) Schmitt.
Charles and his future wife, Dotty, grew up in the Ridgewood neighborhood. They both attended P.S. 93 Queens and Grover Cleveland High School, Brooklyn. Charles was trained at Prairie Bible College in Alberta, Canada (Bachelor of Arts in Religious Education) and Bethany College of Missions in Minneapolis, Minnesota. He earned his Master of Arts in Pastoral Theology, a Doctorate of Pastoral Ministry and a Doctorate of Theology from Logos Christian University in Jacksonville, Florida. He also holds an honorary Doctorate of Divinity from the Methodist Episcopal Church USA.
Charles and Dotty first met in a neighborhood youth group meeting at Trinity Reformed Church when he was 14 and Dotty was 12. Charles had a life-changing encounter with Jesus as a young teenager. He started training for the ministry at age 17 and devoted himself to a lifetime of serving the Lord and His people as a pastor and Bible teacher.
Charles and Dotty married in December 1963 and have three exceptional daughters, Laura (George) Uecker, Dianna (Scott) Whittle, and Jenny Childers. Charles carried a deep love for his five wonderful grandchildren, Chase (25), Kai (24), Dylan (23), Brooke (23), and Hunter (22).
After Charles and Dotty were married, in addition to pastoring, they co-owned seven restaurants, two campgrounds, and a 32-unit apartment complex. Charles also ministered extensively across five continents with a deep love in particular for India and Nepal. He had the privilege of helping to start Bible Schools in India and in Maryland. From his teenage years, Charles had an unwavering heart for missions (especially in the 10/40 window) and for Israel.
Charles authored seven books, including Our Tremendous Lover-a Song of Solomon devotional; A Heart for God-a study on King David; Floods Upon the Dry Ground, a historical study of revival Church history; A Firm Foundation, a study of doctrines of the Christian faith; Ephesians High Adventure; Are These the Last Days; and End Time Truths for End Time People. Two of his books were translated into several languages and used as a curriculum in Bible Schools. Charles fervently carried a passion to teach the Scriptures for the equipping of the Body of Christ and to share the Good News of our Lord Jesus to the Nations.
On January 28, 2025, Charles recorded a short exhortation video on Facebook: "For me to live is Christ and to die is gain" (Philippians 1:21). He encouraged himself and his listeners to prepare to meet Jesus Christ. Charles fought the good fight, he kept the faith, and on Wednesday, February 5, 2025, he finished the race as he stepped into the Healing Presence of His Lord and Savior.
Charles will always be remembered for his generous spirit, lively sense of humor, sincere love for the Word of God, and his profound gift of the exposition of the Scriptures.
In lieu of flowers, the family is suggesting a missions donation.

Years & years ago, we attended Bible camp at Casa Lake, Mn. Lead by Charles Schmidt and Art Katz with infusions of the fabulous Dottie Schmidt! This was way back in the 1970´s and 80´s. We cherished the times and still do. We learned so very much from Charles & Dottie. It added so much to our relationship with Jesus which we carry on yet today. We´ll never forget wonderful meals (using left over hot dog buns to make French toast)....nothing was wasted and cheerfulness was the order of the day. Our great expression of sympathy hardly seems adequate.

As a teenager in Maryland, I had the privilege of attending Immanuel´s Church, a place that shaped my faith and left an indelible mark on my heart. Many years ago, my family and I relocated to California, but the memories of those early days remain precious.
Today, my thoughts drifted to Pastor Charles, wondering how he was doing. Unfortunately, I discovered his obituary instead. My deepest condolences go out to his beautiful family. All I can remember is the radiant smile he always carried, a reflection of the joy and grace he so freely shared. He was a true general of God´s kingdom, a shepherd whose legacy of faith and love will continue to echo through generations. Heaven has gained a faithful servant, and though he is absent from the body, he is present with the Lord.

I had submitted this message on Feb 14 but did not see it posted. Sherly Rajan:
Pastor Charles is my most favorite Bible Teacher. He loved Jesus with a passion and loved and taught His Word to anyone who showed any interest. My Bible is full of notes from him as I went to his bible studies for years long. His timing, pace, sound, and how he taught on Sundays and
Mondays-Saturdays were just so interesting and easy for anyone to be captivated. Christ´s love and His truth was felt very near and real as he taught and ministered. He also taught many godly things to practice in life for any true Christians. For example, he said we need to tip anywhere more than the minimum required as God´s generous people, which I tried to practice from the first time I heard it. He would be the first one to put into an offering box or donation for any good cause. He also said frequently "we can never outgive God". He had such a big and generous heart. He saw great potential in others and did everything in his power to equip others to serve God´s purposes. My husband and my two sons have benefitted so much in knowing pastor Charles and his family. So many of my family members and close friends have come to know Jesus and they are in the Kingdom today because there was an Immanuel´s Church with a Christian mission "to know Jesus and to make Him Known". One of my family members commented when I shared the news of pastor Charles´ home going "when I listen to pastor Charles´ teaching, I felt he is bringing me closer to the Lord", who gave his heart to the Lord in that church (from a Hindu background). No words can ever express fully how much we have been so blessed by him and his family. Our hearts are full of gratitude for a man who loved Jesus so much and labored so hard for others to know Him and we happen to cross our path with him. We love you pastor Charles.

My deepest heartfelt sympathy for you; Dottie, and your family at the passing of Charles to glory. My first meeting with you and Charles was at a bible study at your home many years ago and the beginning of a life long love and respect I have for you and your beautiful family. Thank you for being the dedicated gifts of God you have been to me and the body of Christ. May God's peace sustain you in this time of grief. Blessings!

Pastor Charles was my very favorite Pastor. I started attending Immanuel´s in 1995 because of their Spirit-filled service on Sunday evenings at 6:30 pm. After they stopped, I attended the 8:30 Sunday morning services since I worked nights at the post office. Open day when he had an open house at his beautiful spacious home, he asked me why I fell asleep in the service often. I said I worked at night and if I didn´t stop on the way home to go to Church, I would go home and go to sleep and not go at all. He replied, Then it´s better that you come and fall asleep in the Church. Because of Immanuel´s and Pastor Charles having the Men´s Ministry, which I took my Dad to every Saturday, my Dad is in Heaven. I am very thankful for all the teaching I received from Pastor Charles and my Dad & I were baptized together at Immanuel´s, too. I am glad they are all up there waiting for us to join them.
