Joseph Eugene Schmitt, known affectionately to friends and family as Joe, passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family in his hometown of Evansville, IN, on August 27, 2025. Born on February 27, 1937, in the same city, Joe's journey came full circle as he departed at the age of 88.
Joe leaves behind a legacy of love and dedication, most notably to his wife of 64 years, Charlotte. Together, they built a life rich with joy and family values. Joe was a proud father to his children Joey Schmitt, Kathryn (Mark) Jones, Sarah (Duane) Stigers, Eddie (Heather) Schmitt, and Heather (Joe) Bean. His role as a grandfather was cherished deeply, leaving fond memories with Amanda, Samantha, Jennifer, Kory, Andrew, Clay, and Jacob. The light of his wisdom and humor will continue to shine through his numerous great-grandchildren. He also held a special place in the hearts of his many nieces and nephews. Joe was preceded in death by his parents, Carl and Bessie Schmitt, his sisters Dorothy Carver, Maryann Baker, and Helen Winstead, his beloved dog Goldie, and his grandchildren Kyle and Robert.
Joe's life was marked by service and craftsmanship. A proud Army veteran, he served his country with honor and dedication. After his military service, Joe committed 18 years to Whirlpool, where his work ethic and reliability were unparalleled. His entrepreneurial spirit led him to own and operate Schmitt TV Sales and Service, where he not only served his community but also pursued his passion for electronics.
His interests were a reflection of his inquisitive and intelligent nature. Joe loved his family above all, a sentiment deeply felt by all who knew him. His faith was strong and personal; he found comfort and guidance in reading the Bible. Joe was a lifelong learner with a particular interest in history, often found watching the History Channel, engrossed in understanding the past. His love for electronics was not just a career but a hobby. He spent countless hours reading electronic magazines and tinkering with gadgets, always eager to understand how things worked and how to fix them.
Joe's gentle demeanor, unwavering integrity, and quiet strength touched many lives. His ability to find joy in the simple pleasures, like a good book or a historical documentary, inspired those around him to appreciate the beauty in knowledge and discovery. He had the most generous heart and did everything he could do to go out of his way to help others.
As we say goodbye to Joseph Eugene Schmitt, we honor a man who was the epitome of a life well-lived. His memory will be held in the highest regard, a testament to a life of love, learning, and loyalty. Joe's story does not end with his passing but continues in the hearts of everyone he has left behind. He has set an example for all to live by, and for that, he will be forever remembered.
