James S. Watterson, a cherished father, grandfather, and friend, passed away peacefully on August 17, 2025, in Henderson, KY, at the age of 72. Born on October 15, 1952, James's life was marked by his unwavering kindness, his deep faith, and his enduring love for his family and friends.
James proudly served his country in the Navy before embarking on a fulfilling career, retiring from International Paper as a security officer. He also owned and operated Ladies Only Fitness and Tanning salon with his wife Susan. A devout Christian, James found solace and strength in reading scripture and embodied the teachings of kindness and compassion in his everyday life. He not only read those values, but made them a reality. His friends and family knew he was a caretaker, caring for his wife, mother, and friends when they were ill.
An avid guitar player, James's passion for music led him to form several bands over the years, sharing his love for melody with all who would listen. His musical talent was a source of joy for many, having written many songs and played many concerts.
James's love for the outdoors was evident in his enthusiasm for hunting, a pastime that allowed him to appreciate nature's beauty and the companionship of fellow enthusiasts. His social nature and kind heart were evident, always ready to drop everything to be there for anyone in need. During the holiday season he donned a red leather jacket to play Santa, rocking out the stage with his guitar.
He leaves behind a legacy of love and kindness in his children, Amy Watterson (Tony Dorris) and Bryan Watterson (Alexis), and his beloved grandchildren, Kaleb, Bryleigh, Jamie, and Jacob and nieces and nephews. James was preceded in death by his devoted wife of 48 years, Susan Elaine Watterson, his parents, Paul Watterson and Clelia Millstead, and his sister, Rosalia Watterson.
James's life was a testament to the power of faith, the warmth of friendship, and the strength of family bonds. His kind and faith-filled spirit will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him. As we bid farewell to James S. Watterson, we celebrate a life well-lived and a man well-loved. His memory will forever be a beacon of light for those he leaves behind. Psalm 25 Verses 4-10 New Revised Standard Version
Make me to know your ways, O Lord; teach me your paths. Lead me in your truth and teach me, for you are the God of my salvation; for you I wait all day long.
Be mindful of your mercy, O Lord, and of your steadfast love, for they have been from of old. Do not remember the sins of my youth or my transgressions; according to your steadfast love remember me, for the sake of your goodness, O Lord!
Good and upright is the Lord; therefore he instructs sinners in the way. He leads the humble in what is right and teaches the humble his way. All the paths of the Lord are steadfast love and faithfulness, for those who keep his covenant and his decrees.
