William A. Spalding, known affectionately as Bill to his friends and family, passed away peacefully on August 25, 2025, in his hometown of Evansville, Indiana. Born on July 25, 1936, in the same close-knit community, Bill's life was a testament to dedication, service, and the joy of simple pleasures.
Bill's journey began as the cherished son of Dorothy and Arnold Spalding, and he grew up alongside his siblings, learning the values of hard work and community spirit. Though he was preceded in death by his parents and sibling Arlene Maher, his legacy continues through his loving family. Bill is survived by his children, Stacy (Mike), Randy, and Rodney Spalding; his brother Dick Spalding (Joan); his four grandchildren, Denver Spalding (Brittney), Demi Overton (Curtis), Sarah Akins (Andy), and Robert Bow (Katey); and his eight great-grandchildren.
A proud graduate of Memorial High School, Bill's commitment to his community was evident early on. He served with honor in the National Guard Army Reserves before embarking on a lifelong career in the grocery business. Starting at Economy Foods, Bill's entrepreneurial spirit and dedication led him to co-own and operate Spalding's Food Center with his brother from 1964 to 1991. His work ethic never waned as he later contributed his talents to Wesselman Woods, TPI transport for the railroad, and diligently worked the 2010 and 2020 Census. Bill was the epitome of someone who was always on the move, always contributing, always serving.
Bill's interests were a reflection of his love for camaraderie and competition. He played Clabber, a beloved card game, twice a week without fail, reveling in the strategy and social interaction it provided. He looked forward to cheering on Notre Dame. His involvement with the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) was not just as a member but as an active participant, showcasing his unwavering support for fellow veterans and his country.
Those who knew Bill understood that his life was one of purpose and joy. He found happiness in the day-to-day, in the laughter of his grandchildren, and in the company of friends and family.
As we bid farewell to William A. Spalding, we celebrate a life well-lived, a community enriched, and a family loved. Bill's memory will live on in the hearts of those he touched, in the business he built, and in the service he rendered to his country and community. He will be remembered with fondness and deep respect by all who were fortunate enough to cross his path.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Evansville Wartime Museum.
Visitation will be on Thursday, August 28, 2025 at 9am in the Shepherd Chapel at Sunset Funeral Home. Funeral service will be at 10am with entombment to immediately follow. To send flowers to the family or plant a tree in memory of William, please visit our floral store.
