Charles Smith Obituary
Charles Weston Smith, Jr.
October 14, 1926 - December 26, 2025
Charles Weston Smith Jr., age 99, of Henrico, VA, peacefully departed this life on December 26, 2025. He was born on October 14, 1926, in Richmond, VA, and spent his lifetime in this cherished community. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 61 years, Berkeley Richardson Smith, who passed away on December 27, 2011.
He is survived by two devoted daughters, Corinne S. Gray and Berkeley Weston (Wes) Smith. Charles was educated at Thomas Jefferson High School and pursued further studies at R.P.I. (Virginia Commonwealth University) and Hampden-Sydney College. He proudly served his country as a member of the United States Navy during World War II, enlisting on October 16, 1944, and receiving an honorable discharge on June 19, 1946, achieving the rank of Seaman Second Class.
Professionally, Charles made his mark in the real estate industry, diligently working as a broker at Chewing and Smith Realtors, Charles W. Smith Realtors, and ultimately at Pollard & Bagby Realtors. His commitment to service extended beyond his profession; he was a cherished member of the Downtown Club, Hermitage Country Club, and Westwood Club.
Charles's warmth and his innate ability to connect with people earned him many friendships. He was particularly close to his lifelong friend, Harrison Whitten, and shared a special bond with his dog, Whiskey. He leaves behind a beloved niece, Carol Davis, and her daughter, Shannon. The family also wishes to acknowledge the exceptional care provided by caregivers Harold, Angel, and Sam, who brightened his last days.
An avid skier, Charles began this passion on his honeymoon in 1950, falling in love with skiing nearly as much as he loved Berkeley. He continued to ski well into his 90s, a testament to his spirited nature and zest for life. Charles and Berkeley made frequent ski trips to Alta, UT, where they made so many cherished friends. He is remembered fondly for his affable personality, often expressing sentiments such as, "What's going on?" and "Don't mess it up!"
In lieu of flowers, the family encourages contributions to St. Matthew's Episcopal Church, the SPCA, or the Tuckahoe Volunteer Rescue Squad in his honor.
A private graveside will be held at Hollywood Cemetery. The family invites friends to share stories and shots of Jack Daniel's from 1 to 3 p.m. on Saturday, January 24th, at the Westwood Club, located at 6200 W. Club Lane, Richmond, VA 23226.
Charles Weston Smith Jr. will be deeply missed and forever cherished by all who had the pleasure of knowing him.
