Charles E. Smith, affectionately known as "Chopper," passed away on January 14, 2026, in
Williamsburg, VA. A man of exceptional dedication and spirit, Chopper left an indelible mark on all who knew him.
He proudly served his country in the United States Army during the Vietnam War, where he was awarded both the Bronze Star and Purple Heart for his bravery and service. Following his military career, he worked at Anheuser-Busch Brewery.
He had a zest for life, a wide array of interest and his family always came first. He was passionate about hunting, fishing, and skiing. He also enjoyed weightlifting and had a knack for collecting things of interest. His love for nature was evident in the joy he took from planting and watching his flowers grow. In his younger years, He played William and Mary Rugby as well as soccer, and softball, showcasing his athletic prowess and love for sports.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Hamlet Smith and Gladys Deacon; his brother, Hamlet Smith, Jr.; his sisters, Sally Rutherford and Donna Byrd; and his great-grandson Rainen Cunningham.
He is survived by his devoted wife of 54 years, Marsha Smith, and their cherished daughters, Ursula (Jason) Robins and Julie Smith. His daughter, Tammy Waters and family. His sister, Betty Harris. His legacy continues through his grandchildren: Jacob (Brittany Wolf) Cunningham, Deacon (Mackenzie) Smith, Dayson Smith, Carson Smith, Camden Robins, Jordan Robins, and Sydney Robins. His great-grandchildren, Charles, Elliot, and Clover Cunningham, and Hudson and Beckham Smith, will carry on his memory.
A celebration of Charley's life will take place on Sunday, February 1, 2026, at 2 PM at Bucktrout Funeral Home, where military honors will be rendered. The family will receive friends until 4 PM to reminisce and share stories of Charley's remarkable life.
Memorial donations may be made in Charley's name to the
Wounded Warriors Foundation, honoring his service and commitment to his fellow veterans.
His warmth, courage, and generosity will be remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
