Charles Stefan Obituary

Charles Martin Stefan, 86, of Purcellville, Virginia, died on January 17, 2026, at Inova Loudoun Hospital. Born in Washington, DC, on April 5, 1939, he grew up in Prince

Georges County MD, graduating from Bladensburg High School in 1958. Following his honorable discharge from the U.S. Army in 1962, Charlie settled in Purcellville where he was an active member of the community until his death.

Charlie never married, and he lived his life entirely on his own terms. He was a free spirit, unbothered by convention and uninterested in the predictable rhythms of a nine-to-five job. People sometimes teased him about not having a "regular" occupation, but Charlie carved out his own way, working occasional jobs, and buying and selling items in order to make time for playing cards, white water canoeing and playing golf. He loved golf-not casually but passionately-- and was known to spend long days on the course, playing, laughing, and enjoying the camaraderie. Golf was his joy, his social circle, and perhaps his truest vocation. But Charlie had another side that he seldom talked about. He was always ready to help his friends in need. He helped without being asked and without expecting anything in return.

He is survived by his brothers Richard L. Stefan of Landover Hills, MD, Gary E. Stefan of Portland, OR; nephews William Stefan and Adam Stefan; niece Allison Sarkissian; cousins Phillip Schaeffer, James Schaeffer, Julie Schaeffer, John Schaeffer, Jay Tribby, Lauran Pruett, and Colin Tribby; and numerous friends.

Throughout Charlie's life the essence of who he was never changed: friendly, funny, unmistakably himself and always ready to help family and friends.

No memorial service is planned at this time. Charles Martin Stefan

Most of my memories of my cousin Charles Stefan date from my childhood in the '60s and '70s, when my parents, siblings, and I visited my grandparents' large house on Main Street in Purcellville. Charles had lived with my grandparents for some years by that time. Charles was a little younger than my parents and seemed infinitely cooler than anyone else I knew, perhaps owing to the fact that his waking and sleeping hours were generally the opposite of the rest of the house. My main experience of Charles was that he was always running errands for others, including my aging grandparents, as well as for extended family and others in his local network. At a time in Purcellville's history when public transit was spotty; everyone had a mailbox at the post office; and taxis were few and far between, Charles Stefan was Uber, Lyft, FedEx, DoorDash, and Amazon Prime all embodied in one human being. And, from my perspective as a youngster, he seemed to thrive on it all.

Jay Tribby.
