Charles "Chuck" Steffan died at age 90 on February 15, 2026, in
Scottsdale, Arizona after several years of declining health due to dementia.
He was born on October 4, 1935, in
Fargo, North Dakota, to Joseph Charles Steffan and Marcella Grace (Rutten) Steffan. He grew up in Devils Lake and attended St. Mary's Academy through the 10th grade before enrolling at St. John's Preparatory School in
Collegeville, MN, graduating in 1953. He earned his degree in pharmacy from North Dakota Agricultural College (now North Dakota State University) in 1957 and was a proud member of the Alpha Tau Omega fraternity.
On October 5, 1957, Chuck married Margaret Lillestol in Fargo. They settled in
Warren, MN where he started his pharmacy career working at Rexall Drug for Phil Kotts. In 1970, after the original drug store was destroyed by fire, Chuck became a partner in rebuilding and reopening the business, which was renamed Warren Pharmacy. In the late 1970s, he purchased Mr. Kotts' interest and continued operating the pharmacy until his retirement in 1994, when he sold it to longtime employee Vern Borowicz.
Chuck was deeply committed to the Warren community. He served several years on the Warren City Council and ten years on the Warren Hospital Board. He was a charter member of the Warren Volunteer Ambulance Corps, serving for a decade. In recognition of his contributions, he received the "Builder of Warren" award from the Chamber of Commerce in 1990.
After retiring, Chuck and Margaret enjoyed time at their cabin on Pleasant Lake near
Hackensack, MN, and were finally able to travel internationally. They later sold their home in Warren and relocated to Scottsdale, while continuing to summer on Pleasant Lake for many years before eventually settling full time in Arizona.
Chuck will be remembered for his intelligence, devotion to his family and community, and dry sense of humor. Even in the depths of his illness he continued to smile and make jokes, and was able to remember his family members until the very end of his life.
Chuck is survived by his wife of 68 years, Margaret; his children, Cheryl Garcia of Kent, Washington; Cindy (Steve) Deschamps of Scottsdale; Joe Steffan of Mexico City; and Connie (Jerry) Narlock of
Eagan, MN. He is also survived by his sister Pam (Wayne) Odegaard of Rugby, ND; nine grandchildren and fifteen great-grandchildren.
An interment will be scheduled at a later date at Calvary Catholic Cemetery in Warren.
