Charles Wesley Tilley

HILLSBOROUGH: Charles Wesley Tilley, 92, of Hurdle Mills, NC, passed away on Thursday, March 20, 2025. Born in Orange County to the late Luther Currie Tilley and Dora Kennedy Tilley, he was preceded in death by his wife, Ruby Lee Wilkerson Tilley, and his brother, Lawrence Tilley.
Charles was born, lived his entire life, and died peacefully on his family farm. He was a faithful member of Walnut Grove United Methodist Church with practically perfect attendance for all his 92 years. He was present at Sunday School, worship services, choir rehearsals, committee meetings, stew cookings, and work days - always a kind and helpful servant.
After graduating from Hillsboro High School in 1950, he served in the US Army in the early 1950's stationed in Germany. Apart from the military, he spent his entire working life with the North Carolina Department of Transportation as an equipment operator. At his retirement on his 65th birthday, there were few roads in Orange County, old or new, not touched by Charles Tilley. He spent an active and happy retirement gardening, mowing, serving his church, tracking his grandson's airline flights, and traveling with his beloved wife Ruby.
Charles is survived by his son, Wesley Lee Tilley (Sonja); grandchildren Nathaniel "Nathan" Tilley (Sara) and Lauren Roland Tilley.
A service will be held Tuesday, March 25, 2025 at 3:00 PM at Walnut Grove United Methodist Church in Hurdle Mills.
The family will receive friends at the Church prior to the service from 1:00 to 2:30 and at a reception in the Church Fellowship Hall following the burial.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to either the General Fund (for mission and ministry) or the Harvest Festival Fund (for property maintenance) at Walnut Grove UMC, 7215 Walnut Grove Church Road, Hurdle Mills, NC 27541.
