In Loving Memory of Charles Dean Tomlin

Charles Dean Tomlin, a true Texas original whose handshake was as genuine as his heart, passed away peacefully on January 19, 2026, in Del Rio, Texas. Born on New Year's Eve in 1951 in Bryan, Texas, Charles lived a life as bold, generous, and spirited as the state he proudly called home.

A Life Built on Hard Work and Honesty

Charles was, at his core, a man of the land. A retired rancher and lifelong "cowboy's cowboy," he was never one to sit still. His career as an Ag teacher allowed him to pass along his most valued principles-hard work, integrity, and keeping your word-to countless students. He didn't teach from behind a desk; he taught by living his values every day.

After leaving the classroom, Charles settled in Brackettville, Texas, where he continued the ranching lifestyle that brought him so much purpose and joy.

His stories could fill a book. From long days working ranches to driving a stagecoach, to the adventure of appearing as an extra in Western films, Charles embraced every opportunity life offered. And when he wasn't working or telling tales, you could find him outdoors with his beloved hog and hound dogs-one of his greatest passions.

Rooted in Family

Of all his accomplishments and adventures, Charles held his family closest to his heart. He shared 49 years of devoted marriage with his wife, Cheryl Gaebler Tomlin, building a life marked by love, loyalty, and quiet strength.

He is survived by his loving family: his wife, Cheryl Gaebler Tomlin; his children, daughter Hailey Tomlin Wiggins and her husband, Joel Wayne Wiggins, of Houston; son Toby Tomlin of Corpus Christi; and son James William Tomlin of Brackettville. He is also survived by his granddaughter, Madeline Wiggins of Houston, Texas.

Charles is preceded in death by his father, Leon James Tomlin; his mother, Jimmie Belvin Tomlin; and his sister, Judy Tomlin.

A Friend to Everyone

To know Charles was to be welcomed, seen, and instantly connected. He never met a stranger-within minutes, he'd managed to find a family tie, a mutual friend, or a shared memory. And once he found that connection, you were his: part of his story, part of his circle, part of his family.

He offered a hug as easily as he offered a story, and he made sure no one ever walked away feeling like they didn't belong. "He taught us that a life well lived isn't measured by what you keep, but by the kindness you extend and the honesty with which you live."

His memory will continue to inspire those fortunate enough to have known him.
