Charlie William Bozeman of Baker Florida passed away at home on Sunday 13 October 2024 at the age of 83. After a battle with cancer. He was surrounded by his Wife, Son and Daughter at his passing.
Charlie was born in Ball Ground Georgia on January 27, 1941, the 7th of 8 children of Turner and Lora Bozeman. He had a wonderful time growing up in Georgia.
He joined the United States Coast Guard and left for Boot Camp on December 12,1960 sending this Georgia boy to Cape May NJ. He was in for a shock of how cold it was there and would often write his mom and sisters and tell them how much snow they had, how much he was enjoying boot camp, how well he was doing and to not worry about him. Charlie spent just over 30 years proudly serving his country. During his time in the Coast Guard, he served in Vietnam from January 1, 1969 to November 1, 1969. Served on the Coast Guard Cutter Spencer, Coast Guard Cutter Cape Fair, Coast Guard Cutter Dauntless, and the Coast Guard Cutter Bibb. He was stationed at the Coast Guard Cape May Training Center in Cape May NJ, several times throughout his career serving as Chief Weapons Officer over seeing recruit firearms training, Coast Guard Support Center in Portsmouth VA as the Security Officer and Naval Weapons Support Cetner, Crane IN as the Officer in charge of the US Coast Guard Small Arms Facility. As well as serving on the US Coast Guard Shooting team in which he earned distinguished shooting medals in both rifle and pistol and lots of trophies. Upon retirement Charlie was not ready to stop working. He moved to Crestview Fl in July of 1991 and in August of 1992 he joined the Okaloosa County Sheriff's Department as a Deputy. In October 2008 Charlie retired from his position as a Deputy with the Okaloosa County Sheriff's Department and took a 2-year break. In 2010 he rejoined the Okaloosa County Sheriff's Department, this time as their Armorer and Range Master, retiring for the last time in June 2016.
Charlie had a passion for firearms and the Coast Guard and could talk about both for hours on end. Charlie was so proud of his children and grandchildren and was happiest when he was spending time with any of them. He loved all animals. Especially his African Grey Parrot John, he got John shortly after he was hatched and has had him for over 20 years and his dog skoshi who loved her papa.
Charlie married Maureen Sheehan in October 1965 from that union came 2 children. Charlie married Susan Tyson on June 21, 2008. They enjoyed their time living in Baker, with the many animals they had over the years.
Charlie is survived by his wife Susan, Children: son William(Bill) T. Bozeman and wife Gabrielle of Baker FL, daughter Shannon L. Sanders and husband William "Sandy" of West Weber UT, Grandchildren: Korynn D. Haught(Alex), Thomas B. Sanders, Jack W. Sanders and Shaynee L. Sanders. Great-Grandson Weston A. Haught. Favorite little sister Carol Henson. And many nieces, nephews, family and friends.
Charlie was predeceased by his Mom and Dad. Brother Harley(Buddy)Bozeman. Sisters Ruby Burton, Edna Duckett, Opal Kinsman, Mildred Wilson, and Jessie Raye. His dogs Rosco, JoJo, Booger and cat Luther.
Services entrusted to Whitehurst Powell Funeral Home in Crestview. Viewing at 10:00 am and services at 11:00 am. Charlie will be buried with military honors 2:00 pm at Barrancas National Cemetery on Naval Air Station Pensacola.
