Charlie Lara, a beloved father, grandfather, and community member, peacefully passed away on January 8, 2025, at the age of 93 in Madera, California. Surrounded by his loving family in his final moments, Charlie's life was a testament to hard work, dedication, and love.
Born on January 19, 1931, in Madera, California, to Ignacio and Mary Lara, Charlie grew up in a close-knit family. He was preceded in death by his wife of 66 years, Ida, as well as his four brothers and one sister. Despite these losses, Charlie's memory lives on in the hearts of his family and friends.
He is survived by his sons Charlie Jr., James, and Bryan; his brother Eddie and Eddie's wife Evelyn; his 10 grandchildren; 5 great-grandchildren; and his 1 great-great-granddaughter.
At the age of 17, Charlie answered the call to serve his country, enlisting in the Navy. From October 1948 to September 1952, he proudly served, including two years aboard the U.S.S. Thompson, a destroyer minesweeper, during the Korean War.
After his military service, Charlie returned to civilian life and pursued a career as a barber, where his friendly demeanor made him a favorite in the community. Later, he married the love of his life, Ida, and the two shared a remarkable partnership spanning more than six decades.
Charlie's career took him to Caltrans, where he worked diligently for over 20 years before retiring at the age of 67. In his later years, he devoted himself to working on his farm, a pursuit that brought him great joy and fulfillment.
Charlie's legacy is one of love, service, and dedication to his family, his country, and his community. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to a veteran's organization of your choice, in honor of Charlie's service to his country.
