Charlotte Agnes Johanning, 86, of Sullivan, Missouri, passed away peacefully surrounded by her family on Friday, May 9, 2025 at The Arbors at Dunsford Court in Sullivan. Born on May 25, 1938 in Sullivan, Missouri to Joseph and Wyanetha (Sparks) Casey, Charlotte's life was marked by her unwavering kindness, her deep faith, and her boundless talents, traits that endeared her to all who were privileged to know her.
Charlotte's early years were spent in Sullivan, where she grew up and attended local schools. A proud alumnus of Sullivan High School, she graduated in the class of 1956, carrying with her the fond memories and friendships that would last a lifetime. Her life took a joyous turn when she married Donald Schatz on September 3, 1960, at St. Anthony Catholic Church in Sullivan. Together, they welcomed five children into the world: Mark, Jody, Ross, Jesse, and Danna. The family settled near Japan, Missouri, where they built a life together alongside Don's brother Derl and wife Dema; their children Scarlett, Dirk, Kirk, Matt and Sabrina - where together they creating cherished memories on the Schatz farm.
Charlotte's heart was always first and foremost with her family. She cherished her role as a wife and mother, dedicating herself to creating a warm and loving home. Known for her culinary talents, she delighted in baking, with her Christmas cookies becoming a much-anticipated treat each year. She was also an accomplished seamstress, providing her children with beautiful clothing and ingenious repair work. Despite her busy schedule, Charlotte always found time to connect with her children, whether through daily activities or special moments together.
As her children matured, Charlotte shared her nurturing spirit with the broader community, working at Strain-Japan School and offering childcare to many, including her cherished grandchildren and the children of friends. Her home became a hub of warmth and care, a place where everyone felt welcomed and loved.
Following Donald's passing in 1999, Charlotte found love again and married Darrell Johanning on April 11, 2005. Their union brought 20 meaningful years of companionship and shared experiences, further enriching Charlotte's life.
Charlotte's interests were as diverse as they were passionate. She loved to dance, often bringing joy to those around her with her graceful movements. A voracious reader, she found solace and adventure in the pages of books. Her faith was a cornerstone of her existence; she walked closely with the Lord, finding strength and comfort in daily Bible readings and devotions.
Volunteering was second nature to Charlotte. Whether at schools, churches, with the Ambassadors Club, or during Hootenannies, she gave her time and talents generously. Her love for her family was unparalleled, and she relished in making memories with her grandchildren. Many will fondly recall "Grandma Week" or the epic "Road Trip" to California, experiences that exemplify Charlotte's commitment to family and fun.
Charlotte Johanning will be remembered as a kind-hearted, faith-filled, and creative soul whose legacy will continue to inspire those she has left behind. Her life was a testament to the power of love and the joy that can be found in simple acts of kindness and devotion.
